The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates will wrap up a three-game series Wednesday afternoon from Chase Field. The Pirates will send 30-year old right-hander Chris Archer to the mound, and the D-Backs will give the starting nod to 35-year old right-hander Zack Greinke. The Diamondbacks lead the season series 4-1.

Archer Returns From Injured List

Chris Archer will return from the injured list for his sixth start of the season in this one. Archer last saw action on April 26th against the Dodgers and he was roughed up, surrendering six runs in four innings in a 6-2 defeat. The seven-year veteran right-hander has pitched well with the exception of his latest start, and he features a 4.33 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP accompanied with a 1-2 record in 27 innings logged. Archer has seen limited action against Arizona, conceding four runs in only 7.2 career innings. Eduardo Escobar is 3 for 16 against Archer, while David Peralta is 2 for 4, and Ketel Marte is 0 for 2.

Starling Marte is doing a good job setting the table at the top of the Pirates batting order, registering a terrific .327 average on the month paired with scored 10 runs scored. The career .284 hitter has increased his average to .252 to go with four home runs and 17 RBI’s on the season. Marte went 3 for 5 with one triple in Monday’s series opener.

The Pirates are scoring an average of 3.71 runs per game, ranking them down at 26th in the big leagues. The Pittsburgh pitching staff features a solid 4.26 team ERA, positioning them 13th in the Majors. The Pirates feature an 11-9 record on the road entering Tuesday’s play.

Greinke Remains Undefeated at Chase Field

D-Backs’ ace Zack Greinke will be on the hill for the 10th time of the season in this one. Greinke was sharp in his previous start, limiting the Braves to only one run in seven strong innings in a start that resulted in a no-decision in a 2-1 Arizona loss. The veteran right-hander is having an outstanding season, sporting a 3.16 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP accompanied with a 5-1 record in 57 innings, and he has only issued eight walks. He fired seven shutout innings against the Pirates last month, and he holds a 9-4 record and a 4.17 ERA in 14 career starts against Pittsburgh. Josh Bell is 1 for 8 against Greinke, while Starling Marte is 2 for 15, and Gregory Polanco is 1 for 10.

Watch for Adam Jones in this one as he has seen plenty of Pirates’ starter Archer in his years in the AL East. Jones is hitting .286 with two homers and eight RBI’s in 49 career at-bats against Archer. The 33-year old center fielder is only hitting .233 with five RBI’s this month, and he owns a .271 average with eight homers and 23 RBI’s on the season. Jones is 4 for 13 with three RBI’s against the Pirates this season.

The Diamondbacks continue to hit, ranking third in the Majors with a .261 team batting average, and they are averaging 5.10 runs per game, good for 10th overall. The Arizona pitching staff owns a 4.25 team ERA, placing them 12th in the Major Leagues.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I am siding with the Pirates in this one. While Zack Greinke is pitching well, it has not translated to wins recently as Arizona has lost in each of his last two starts. Pittsburgh is a strong road team that features an 11-9 road record entering Tuesday’s action, and overall their pitching continues to thrive.

Furthermore, the Diamondbacks have cooled off significantly at the plate recently, plating three or fewer runs in six out of their last eight games heading into Tuesday, and Pirates’ starter Chris Archer is a reliable option on the mound.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The under is a strong option in this matchup. Zack Greinke is much better at home this season where he holds a 2.22 ERA on the season, and the under is 4-1 in his last five starts overall, and 4-1 in his last five starts following a Quality Start in his previous outing.

In addition, the Diamondbacks are not quite as dangerous against right-handed pitching. They are only hitting .244 against right-handers compared to a .299 average against lefties, so I am confident backing Chris Archer, plus the under is 5-1 in the D-Backs’ last six Wednesday games.

Prediction: Under

First Five Innings Side Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I am opting with the Pirates on the five-inning line as well. The Pirates do a good portion of their damage early in games. They have plated 86 of their 147 runs in the first five innings of a game. Arizona has been the opposite as their two highest scoring innings occur in the later innings.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates

First Five Innings Prop Prediction

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I am selecting Pittsburgh to score first. Zack Greinke is having trouble in the first inning this season, conceding seven runs on 13 hits in his nine innings of work in the opening frame. Also, the Pirates are productive in the first inning where they have scored 23 runs in 39 games, marking their highest scoring inning.

Prediction: Pirates to Score First
