It’s the middle game of an early week set between a pair of slumping teams in the Midwest. The Texas Rangers are on the road for the second game of a three-game set with the Kansas City Royals Wednesday night. Texas was swept over the weekend on the road by the Astros, getting drubbed 15-5 in the finale Sunday afternoon. Kansas City lost their second straight as they fell 7-1 in the rubber game of their set against the Phillies at home Sunday afternoon. The pitching matchup for Tuesday’s opener saw Shelby Miller take the mound for the Rangers against the Royals’ Danny Duffy. First pitch in that contest was set for 8:05 pm ET.

Texas Rangers Trying to Climb Toward .500

Texas was whipped in a four-game set with the Astros as they were swept by their in-state AL West rivals. The Rangers entered Tuesday’s action fourth in the AL West, eight games behind the Astros for the division lead. Texas got two hits each from Elvis Andrus (two runs, two RBI), Nomar Mazara (RBI), Logan Forsythe and Asdrubal Cabrera in the loss. Andrus (his ninth) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (his first) each homered in the defeat. Adrian Sampson (0-3) took the loss as he allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work.

Mike Minor takes the hill for his ninth start of the season for the Rangers in this contest. He comes in 3-3 with a 2.68 ERA, a 1.043 WHIP, 17 walks and 53 strikeouts over 53.2 innings of work this season. Minor took the loss in his last start, which came Thursday on the road against the Astros. He allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over five innings in a 4-2 Texas defeat. Minor is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, six walks and 27 strikeouts over 20 innings in his last three starts. He is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA, a 1.222 WHIP, one walk and 13 strikeouts over 18 innings in three career starts against the Royals. Minor is 3-2 with four saves, a 2.86 ERA, a 1.093 WHIP, eight walks and 55 strikeouts over 50.1 innings in 37 career appearances, one start, at Kauffman Stadium in his career.

Kansas City Royals Hoping to Get Out of AL Central Cellar

Kansas City dropped the final two games of their three-game interleague set against the Phillies as their bats were quieted. The Royals entered Tuesday’s action in the basement of the AL Central, 11.5 games behind the Twins in the division picture. Kansas City finished Sunday’s contest with six hits as Billy Hamilton and Alex Gordon (RBI) each had two. The lack of offensive production proved too much for Jakob Junis (3-4), who took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with five walks and four strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work.

Jorge Lopez takes the mound for his ninth start of the year for the Royals in search of his first victory. He is 0-4 with a 6.07 ERA, a 1.488 WHIP, 17 walks and 39 strikeouts over 43 innings of work this season. Lopez took the loss in his last start, which came on the road against the Astros last Wednesday. He threw 2.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in a 9-0 Royals defeat. Lopez is 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA, a 1.92 WHIP, eight walks and 10 strikeouts over 13 innings in his last three starts. He faces the Rangers for the first time in his major league career in this, his 29th big league appearance and 18th major league start. Lopez is 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA, a 1.529 WHIP, 11 walks and 28 strikeouts over 34.2 innings in seven career starts at Kauffman Stadium.

Rating:

Kansas City has had their problems putting runs on the board with any consistency this season. The Royals mustered three runs or less in 18 of their first 41 games entering Tuesday’s contest. That includes just one run over the final two games of the series against the Phillies and they have only six runs in their four previous games. Five of those came in Friday’s contest when they beat the Phillies. Minor has pitched well in the early going and has been the Rangers’ most consistent starter. Lopez has sputtered and has as many big league wins this season as you. That trend continues here as the Rangers get the upper hand in this contest.

Prediction: Texas Rangers -128

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

Texas has been a solid offensive team all season long and entered Tuesday leading the majors with 5.61 runs per contest. Meanwhile, Kansas City is 26th in the majors with a 5.01 team ERA and 27th with a 1.44 WHIP on the season. The teams are good at swiping bases as the Royals entered Tuesday leading the majors with 40 steals while the Rangers are third with 32. Minor has pitched well this season and Lopez has struggled: can he turn things around and notch his first win of the year?

The under is 5-1 in the Rangers’ last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400, 5-0 in Minor’s last 5 Wednesday starts, 6-1 in Minor’s last 7 starts vs. a team with a losing record and 4-1 in Minor’s last 5 starts with 5 days of rest. Kansas City has seen the under go 3-0-1 in their last 4 overall, 3-0-1 in their last 4 on grass and 4-0 in their last 4 home games. Texas does their part at the plate but Minor keeps the Royals in check to keep this one under the total.

Prediction: Under 9.5
