A pair of teams that are battling to maintain their standing in their respective divisions in the National League continues a series in the Steel City. The Los Angeles Dodgers play the middle game of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday night. Los Angeles finished a brief, two-game interleague set against the Rays on the road Wednesday night, losing 8-1 for a split. Pittsburgh finished up a three-game series at home against Colorado Thursday afternoon. The pitching matchup for Friday’s series opener saw Walker Buehler take the mound for the Dodgers: Pittsburgh had not named a starter at this point. First pitch for that contest was set for 7:05 pm ET.

Los Angeles Dodgers Seek to Build on NL West Lead

Los Angeles ended up with a split of their two-game series with the Rays on the road as a seven-run eighth inning broke open a 1-1 game. The Dodgers entered Friday with a six-game edge over the Padres in the NL West race. Los Angeles finished with five hits in the game: Max Muncy (run, RBI) was the lone player with two, including his 10th homer of the season. Rich Hill turned in a quality start but came up with a no-decision: he allowed one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Dylan Floro (1-1) took the loss as he allowed four runs on three hits and a hit batter without recording an out.

Hyun-Jin Ryu takes the ball for the Dodgers as he logs his ninth start of the season in this contest. He comes in 6-1 with a 1.52 ERA, a 0.742 WHIP, four walks and 59 strikeouts over 59.1 innings of work this season. Ryu picked up the win in his last start, which came on the road against the Reds Sunday. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in an 8-3 Los Angeles victory. Ryu is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.50 WHIP, two walks and 20 strikeouts over 24 innings in his last three starts. He is 5-0 with a 2.51 ERA, a 1.082 WHIP, five walks and 27 strikeouts over 32.1 innings in five career starts against the Pirates. Ryu is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA, a 0.923 WHIP, three walks and seven strikeouts over 13 innings in two career starts at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates Hope to Get Back on Track

Pittsburgh salvaged the finale of their three-game set against the Rockies as they rode four homers and a big offensive barrage to victory. The Pirates entered Friday 3.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central race. Pittsburgh got three hits from Josh Bell (three runs, two RBI) and Colin Moran (two runs, two RBI) in the contest. Starling Marte (his fifth), Bell (his 16th), Gregory Polanco (his fifth) and Bryan Reynolds (his fourth) each homered in the contest. Jordan Lyles (5-1) picked up the win despite allowing six runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts over 5.2 innings of work before turning things over to the bullpen.

Joe Musgrove takes the hill for his 11th appearance and 10th start of the season for the Pirates here. He is 3-4 with a 3.67 ERA, a 1.074 WHIP, 17 walks and 44 strikeouts over 54 innings of work this season. Musgrove picked up the win in his last start, which came Sunday on the road against the Padres. He threw 6.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in a 6-4 Pirates victory. Musgrove is 2-1 with a 6.06 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, eight walks and 12 strikeouts over 16.1 innings in his last three starts. He is 0-2 with a 3.09 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, two walks and 10 strikeouts over 11.2 innings in two career starts against the Dodgers in his career. Musgrove is 5-7 with a 4.60 ERA, a 1.291 WHIP, 21 walks and 76 strikeouts over 86 innings in 15 career starts at PNC Park.

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Pirates are dealing with serious issues in their rotation with Jameson Taillon and Trevor Williams on the injured list while Chris Archer is struggling. Ryu has been on fire with 31 consecutive scoreless innings entering this contest on the books. The Dodgers have plenty of offensive weapons to support their pitching and with Ryu throwing zeroes, it doesn’t take much to put the team in a favorable position. With the Pirates having so many issues on the mound, you have to lean toward Los Angeles in this contest.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers -145

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

When you’re clicking the way Ryu has, it’s tough to expect a ton of offensive fireworks from the opposition. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his starts this season and has given up a total of three runs in his last five starts, which span a total of 39 innings. Musgrove has struggled of late and, despite picking up the win in his last start, gave up four runs in the contest. His velocity has dropped between two and two and a half miles an hour from last season, which has been cause for concern. He still has a good FIP ERA of 3.05 while allowing just two homers on the year but can he get enough outs here while avoiding the hard contact that the Dodgers inevitably bring?

The under is 5-1-1 in the Dodgers’ last 7 Saturday games, 5-0 in Ryu’s last 5 Saturday starts, 8-2 in Ryu’s last 10 road starts and 4-1 in Ryu’s last 5 road starts vs. a team with a winning record. Pittsburgh has seen the under go 37-13-2 in their last 52 Saturday games and 10-4 in their last 14 home games vs. a team with a winning road record. Look for this one to stay under the total as Ryu puts together another solid start in a season full of them in the first third of the season.

Prediction: Under 8
