Arizona opened their four-game set against the Dodgers with a statement 5-3 win Thursday night in Phoenix. Gabriel Moreno’s grand slam off Yoshinobu Yamamoto was the difference, as the Diamondbacks capitalized on a fourth-inning rally and never looked back. Brandon Pfaadt outdueled Yamamoto, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings before the Dodgers mounted a late comeback attempt. Shohei Ohtani’s ninth-inning homer wasn’t enough, and Arizona’s bullpen closed the door for their 20th win. The NL West remains a battle, with four teams already at 20-plus victories

Dodgers look to bounce back

The Dodgers remain one of baseball’s elite, but Thursday’s defeat showcased some vulnerabilities. Despite ranking among MLB’s best in most offensive categories in runs per game (5.42), 3rd in batting average (.259), and 2nd in both OPS (.797) and home runs (60)-the Dodgers couldn’t solve Brandon Pfaadt until late. Shohei Ohtani continues to star, hitting his 11th home run in the ninth, while Teoscar Hernández leads the team with a .315 average and Ohtani boasts a 1.032 OPS.

Pitching has been solid overall, with an 11th-ranked 3.72 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP (15th), but Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s rough fourth inning proved costly. The Dodgers’ bullpen is reliable, but the team’s 25th-ranked quality starts (9) remains a concern. Defensively, LA is sound, committing just 16 errors (9th fewest). Despite dropping three of their past five, the Dodgers are 25-13 and sit atop a competitive NL West.

Diamondbacks take the opener

Arizona’s 5-3 win Thursday was a testament to timely hitting and strong starting pitching. Gabriel Moreno’s grand slam-his first homer of the season was the game’s pivotal moment, coming off MLB ERA leader Yamamoto in the fourth. Ketel Marte added a solo shot in the fifth, and Brandon Pfaadt delivered 6 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing just four hits and striking out six. Arizona’s bullpen, anchored by Kevin Ginkel’s first save, held off a late Dodgers rally.

Offensively, the Diamondbacks have been steady, matching the Dodgers with 5.42 runs per game (4th), a .259 batting average (3rd), and a .797 OPS (2nd). Their 60 home runs rank second, and they’ve swiped 27 bases (18th). On the mound, Arizona’s 3.72 ERA is 11th, and their 1.27 WHIP is 15th, though quality starts (9) are an issue. Defensively, they’ve committed 16 errors (9th fewest). With 20 wins, Arizona is firmly in the NL West mix, showing they can compete with the division’s best

Best Bets for Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Dodgers are in a strong bounce-back spot. Arizona’s Eduardo Rodriguez has struggled against LA, with Dodgers hitters batting .329 against him lifetime. The Diamondbacks are just 2-4 in Rodriguez’s last six starts, and 0-4 in his last four home starts against winning teams. Roki Sasaki is settling in for LA, and the Dodgers’ bullpen and lineup depth give them the edge. After Thursday’s loss, expect a focused Dodgers squad to cover the run line.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 (+120)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

Despite both teams’ offensive firepower and their recent trend of head-to-head overs, this total is too high. Roki Sasaki has been showing improvement and has a strong bullpen behind him. On other side, although Rodriguez has struggled this season, he is a battle tested veteran who I do not see imploding. I see the Dodgers winning this game in the range of 6-3, but this game does not get to 11 runs.

Prediction: Under 10.5
