Miami Hoping to Prevail in Series Finale

Miami suffered their seventh loss in eight games as they were hammered in the opening game of this series Monday night. The Marlins entered Tuesday 24-40 and sat in the basement of the NL East, 17 games behind the Mets for the top spot. Against Pittsburgh, Miami finished with seven hits with Heriberto Hernandez (run) the lone player with two. Otto Lopez (his sixth) went deep for the Marlins in the loss as the team went one of 10 with runners in scoring position while leaving nine men on base in the game. Eury Perez (0-1) took the loss in his season debut as he threw three innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, before departing.

Cal Quantrill is on the bump for the Marlins here as he makes his 13th start of the season. He is 3-6 with a 5.63 ERA, a 1.491 WHIP, 17 walks and 40 strikeouts over 54.1 innings of work on the year. Pirates Seeking to Maintain Recent Push

Pittsburgh won their season-high fourth straight game as they were victorious in the opening game of this series Monday night. The Pirates entered Tuesday 27-40 and sat in the basement of the NL East, 13.5 games behind the Cubs for the top spot. Against Miami Monday, Pittsburgh banged out 15 hits with Andrew McCutchen (two runs, RBI) and Adam Frazier (run, RBI) each had three to lead the charge. The Pirates went eight of 19 with runners in scoring position in the contest. Mike Burrows threw 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits or walks while striking out two.

Bailey Falter takes the ball for his 14th start of the season for the Pirates in this contest. He is 4-3 with a 3.49 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 24 walks and 43 strikeouts over 69.2 innings of work on the season. Falter didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came at home against the Phillies Friday night. He threw 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in a game the Pirates eventually won 5-4. In his last three starts, Falter is 1-0 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.085 WHIP, six walks and four strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Best Bets for Miami Marlins vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Marlins struggle to generate any kind of offensive production, though they have been better against left-handed pitching as opposed to right-handed pitching this season. With that said, the Pirates entered Tuesday winners of four straight games, giving them their longest win streak of the season. Quantrill has pitched well against the Pirates in his career but we also saw him take the loss against the dismal Rockies last week in his previous start. Falter has pitched well of late and the Pirates actually have some momentum on their side entering the finale. Give the edge to the Pirates in this contest as they come away with the victory.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Penguins -146

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Miami has gone over the number in 35 of their 64 games on the season entering Tuesday night. The Marlins are 22nd in the majors with 4.05 runs per game, a number that climbs to 4.30 runs per game on the road. Miami has an average total of 9.52 runs per game and that number inches up to 10.37 runs per game on the road this season. Pittsburgh has seen the under post a 38-26-3 mark on the year heading into Tuesday’s action. The Pirates are tied for 29th in the majors with 3.25 runs per game and that number climbs to 3.39 runs per game at PNC Park. Pittsburgh has an average total of 7.31 runs per game but that number climbs to 7.53 runs per game at home. With both teams hardly offensive juggernauts, lean to the under in this contest.

Prediction: Under 8.5
