The Milwaukee Brewers will host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday. On Friday, these two teams opened the series but that game was not yet complete at the time of this preview. The Pirates took two of the first three games against the Brewers this season when these teams met in Pittsburgh from April 16-18, with Milwaukee favored in each game.
Kuhl has had success against BrewersThe Pirates are last in the NL Central with a 23-38 record and 10-19 on the road. The Pirates offense is one of the worst in baseball, ranking dead-last, scoring 3.5 runs per game and only 42 home runs which are 12 less than any other team in baseball. Bryan Reynolds leads the club with 10 home runs and 30 RBI.
Chad Kuhl will start for the Pirates on Sunday. He is 0-3 with a 5.61 ERA. He faced the Brewers in a 6-5 Pirates extra-innings win back on April 18, allowing three earned runs in five innings. He has faced the Brewers nine times in Kuhl's career and is 4-0 with a 2.12 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
Brewers amongst division leadersThe Brewers are second in the NL Central with a 35-27 record and 17-15 at home. The Brewers offensively are 29th with a .212 batting average and 22nd, scoring just under four runs a game. Avisail Garcia leads the team with 12 home runs and 36 RBI.
Corbin Burnes is scheduled to start for Milwaukee on Saturday. In 10 starts this season, Burnes is 3-4 with a 1.97 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. Burnes has made 14 total appearances against the Pirates in his career but just two starts. All-time against Pittsburgh Burners is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.
- Pirates are 6-3 in their last 9 games as an underdog of at least +150 against the Brewers
- Brewers are 1-4 in Burnes' last 5 starts vs. National League Central.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Brewers are the better team, but there is no value in backing them with a line of this size. Milwaukee has lost four of the last six games started by Burnes and has scored three runs or less in five of his last six starts. Chad Kuhl's numbers don't look overly impressive at first glance, but the right-hander has been exceptional against Milwaukee in his career and has kept the Pirates competitive in games this year. The Pirates bullpen is also 11th in baseball with a 3.68 ERA, compared to Milwaukee's, which is 17th with a 4.27 ERA.
I'm going to back the Pirates behind Kuhl and his 4-0 lifetime record against Milwaukee for some heavy plus money on Saturday.
Full-Game Total Pick
Although neither team has been solid offensively this season, the total here is low considering that neither starter is likely to go far beyond five or six innings in this game. There have also been at least eight runs scored, in eight of the last 10 meetings between these franchises.
For Pittsburgh, the over has cashed in seven of Chad Kuhl's last eight starts as a road underdog, and the over has also cashed in in four of the teams' last five road games where the total was set between 7.0-8.5. I like the over here.
