The San Diego Padres collide with the New York Mets in a clash of the best pitching staffs in the game. Joe Musgrove will be seeking his fifth win after the Mets beat him last week. It will be Marcus Stroman looking to top the Padres for the second time this season. The Mets lead the season series 3-2 after collecting a 3-2 victory on Friday night.
Musgrove Tagged with Loss Against Mets
The Padres will have Joe Musgrove on the mound for this one. Musgrove took on the Mets in his latest start and gave up three runs including two home runs on eight hits in a five-inning outing, leading to the loss to bring his record to 4-5. The veteran right-hander is having a tremendous season. He has allowed one or zero earned runs in four out of his last five performances to improve his ERA to 2.33 accompanied by a 0.84 WHIP in 65.2 innings pitched. Musgrove stands at 1-3 with a poor 6.11 ERA in 17.2 innings against the Mets.
San Diego is on the road after posting a 3-4 record on a seven-game homestand. They won two of four vs. the Mets and followed by losing two of three to the Cubs to dip to third place in the competitive NL West.

Wil Myers has been kept in check recently as he has yet to record an RBI this month. The 30-year old right fielder is having a mediocre season, amassing 23 RBI’s and a .708 OPS. Myers tallied four hits in 17 at-bats against the Mets last week and is 2 for 12 in his career against Stroman.
The Padres are scoring an average of 4.48 runs per game, good for 13th in the big leagues. The pitching staff is dominant, sporting a Major League-best 2.89 team ERA.
Stroman Seeks Another Gem vs. Padres, Mets Remain in 1st Place
Marcus Stroman will make his 13th start of the season on Saturday. Stroman just pitched against the Padres in his latest effort and was fantastic, allowing one run (zero earned) in 6.2 innings, resulting in the win to lift his record to 5-4. The veteran right-hander is locked in, allowing only a combined five runs over his last four starts, and is sporting a sparkling 2.41 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 71 innings of action. Stroman is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in three career starts against San Diego.
First-place New York is back at Citi Field after a successful 5-4 road trip. The offense is starting to find a groove, making this club hard to beat considering the terrific pitching. They are playing with key omissions including J.D. Davis, Michael Conforto, and Jeff McNeil.

Francisco Lindor is finally heating up, registering a .323 average this month. Overall it’s been a very uninspiring season in his first year in Queens, posting a .219 average with 13 RBI’s and a .650 OPS. Linder went 5 for 16 with one RBI against the Padres last week.
The Mets rank 29th overall with 3.80 runs per game. The pitching staff features a terrific 3.15 team ERA, landing them second in the Majors.
The San Diego Padres are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 games overall.
- 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
- 2-8 in their last 10 road games against a right-handed starter.
The New York Mets are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 home games against the Padres.
- 4-0 in their last 4 home games.
- 5-1 in Stroman's last 6 starts against the NL West.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Mets and Padres were involved in a thrilling four-game series last week with the Mets coming away with two wins. One of those victories came with Marcus Stroman on the hill. He conceded only one run (zero earned) in 6.2 innings and the right-hander has only given up a total of three runs over his last three starts.
Furthermore, the Mets were not intimidated by Padres’ starter Joe Musgrove last week as they managed three runs on eight hits. Also, Musgrove owns a terrible 6.11 ERA in his career against the Mets. San Diego is slipping a bit, dropping five out of their last six games overall.
Full-Game Total Pick
This should be a pitchers’ duel. San Diego is slumping at the plate right now. They have tallied three or fewer runs in eight out of their last ten clashes including only two runs in Friday's loss and the Mets' pitching continues to dazzle. The under is also 5-0-1 in Stroman’s last 6 starts on five days of rest.
In addition, the Mets only scored a total of 13 runs in four games against the Padres last week and continue to play without Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto. The under is 4-0 in the Mets’ last four home games against a team with a winning record.
Full-Game Prop Bet
The under on the Padres' team total is an attractive prop. The Padres could not solve Stroman or the Mets bullpen last week and as they scored two or fewer runs in three of the four games which continued with just two in Friday’s defeat. Also, the Mets bullpen has climbed all the way up to 4th in the NL with a 3.55 ERA.
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
I expect a scoreless first inning. Marcus Stroman is almost impossible to solve in the opening frame where he has conceded one earned run in 12 innings. The Padres only have 29 runs in the first innings and the Mets have just 24 in 55 games.
