The Arizona Diamondbacks will host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the series conclusion Wednesday afternoon from Chase Field. The Pirates will give the starting nod to 26-year old right-hander Jameson Taillon, and the Diamondbacks will turn to 34-year old right-hander Zack Greinke. The Diamondbacks won the season-series opener by a 9-5 score on Monday night.
Taillon Allows Eight Hits in Loss to Dodgers
Jameson Taillon will get the call for the 14th time of the season, eyeing his second win of the month. Tallion allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings against the Dodgers in his latest start, leading to the loss to drop his record to 3-5. The third-year right-hander has come through with some terrific performances this season including eight shutout innings against the Cardinals last week, and he currently owns a 4.08 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 70.2 innings logged on the season. Tallion has tallied a Quality Start in two out of his last three outings. This will mark his first career meeting against the D-Backs.
Josh Harrison is swinging the bat well, amassing eight hits and four RBI’s in his last five games, and he features a .321 average this month. The seven-year veteran second baseman is having a solid season in the leadoff position, sporting a .290 average with three homers and 14 RBI’s. Harrison struggled against the Diamondbacks last season, going 4 for 28 with zero RBI’s, and he went 0 for 2 in Monday’s loss. The Pirates have been inconsistent at the plate, and they currently place ninth in the Majors with 4.58 runs per game. The Pittsburgh pitching staff owns a 4.27 team ERA, positioning them 20th overall.
Greinke Allows Two Homers in Second Straight Win
Zack Greinke will take the mound for the 14th time of the season, targeting his third win of the month. Greinke wasn’t sharp in his latest effort, conceding four runs (three earned) including two home runs against the Rockies, leading to the win to boost his record to 5-4. The Diamondbacks’ ace is having another solid season, recording a 3.54 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 79 innings pitched. He owns a subpar 4.59 ERA in 11 career starts against the Pirates, however, he does feature a 7-3 record. Starling Marte is 0 for 9 against Greinke, while Gregory Polanco is 0 for 6, and Josh Harrison is 1 for 9.
Paul Goldschmidt is finally in a rhythm at the plate, smashing five home runs along with 12 RBI’s in his last nine games. The 30-year old slugger struggled in the first two months of the season, and he is now hitting .253 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI’s on the season. Goldschmidt belted four homers along with six RBI’s in 31 at bats against the Pirates last season, and he went 1 for 5 in Monday’s win. The Diamondbacks are red-hot offensively and they are currently averaging 4.28 runs, ranking them 17th in the Majors. The Arizona pitching staff features an excellent 3.43 team ERA, good for fourth in the Major Leagues.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 games overall.
- 1-4 in Taillon’s last 5 road starts.
- 1-5 in their last 6 road games.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are:
- 17-2 in Greinke’s last 19 home starts against a team with a losing record.
- 5-1 in their last 6 home games against a right-handed starter.
- 4-0 in their last 4 games overall.
I am taking the Diamondbacks in this contest. Zack Greinke is having a dominating season on his home field, sporting a minuscule 1.64 ERA with a 3-0 record in seven starts at Chase Field this season, plus the Pirates lineup is only hitting a combined .174 against him. Furthermore, the Pirates are struggling right now, dropping seven out of their last nine games, while Arizona is red-hot, winning eight out of their last ten, and they have scored at least eight runs in four consecutive games heading into Tuesday’s action.
