Major League Baseball action on Wednesday evening and the National League West will square off with the National League Central as the San Diego Padres duke it out with the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St Louis, Missouri in game three of their three-game series. The Cards took game one by a score of 5-2. Pitching Probables: Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) will get the call for the Padres and the Cardinals will counter with Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35 ERA).

Offense Struggles In Game One Loss

The San Diego Padres are not a good offensive team once again, but that offense had been playing better of late as they averaged 4.92 rpg over their 10 games prior to game one of this series on Monday. Well, that offense did not play well in that game as they mustered just four hits in a 5-2 loss. One of those hits was a homer by Cory Spangenberg, which was his 6th of the year. That homer gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, but it was all St Louis after that. Jordan Lyles got the start in the game and it was not a good one as he allowed four ERs on 11 hits and no walks while striking out just two in 6.0 innings of work. He took the loss and is now 2-3 with a 4.83 ERA on the year, including 1-2 with a 7.77 ERA in his last three starts. Despite being in last place in the National League West, the Padres are just 6.5 games out of first. The Padres have averaged 3.52 rpg and have allowed 4.21 rpg on the road so far.

Eric Lauer will toe the slab for the Padres and he has gone 2-4 with a 6.64 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP in nine starts in this his first year in the league, including 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA and a 2.07 WHIP in five starts on the road. He faced the Cards once this year and he lost that game at home by a score of 9-4. Lauer allowed six ERs on seven hits, including four homers, in just 2.1 innings of work in that game.

The Padres have been a poor offensive team this year as they come in ranked 25th in the league in scoring, putting up just 3.87 rpg, while also ranking 25th in hitting at .233 and 27th in homers with 61. On the mound, they have been below average so far as they enter this game ranked 20th in the league in ERA at 4.23, while also ranking 22nd in WHIP at 1.37 and 9th in K’s with 580. The pen for the Padres ranks 7th in the league with a 3.22 ERA.

Martinez/ Ozuna Lead Cards Over The Padres

The St Louis Cardinals are keeping pace in the National League Central as they will enter play on Tuesday evening just 2.5 games out of first. The Cards took game one of this series by a score of 5-2 and have now won four of their last five games. It has really helped that those games have been against the Marlins, Reds, and Padres. Jose Martinez is having a very solid season so far and he had a good game against the Padres as he had three hits, including his 10th homer of the year and he drove in two runs as well. Marcell Ozuna also had a nice game with two, including his7th homer of the year and he drove in a pair of runs as well. Jack Flaherty got the win after allowing just one ER on three hits and a walk while striking out six in 6.1 innings of work. He is now 3-2 with a 2.96 ERA on the year. Bud Norris got his 13th save. The Cardinals have averaged 4.21 rpg and have allowed 3.79 rpg here at Busch Stadium for the year.

The Cardinals will trot out Luke Weaver in this one and he has gone 3-5 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in 13 starts on the year, including 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in six starts here at home. In his career, he has gone 4-4 with a 4.33 ERA in 17 games (14 starts) here at Busch Stadium and 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts during the month of June, while against the Padres he has gone 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two starts.

The Cardinals have been average on offense so far as they come in ranked 15th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.33 rpg, while also ranking 17th in hitting at .244 and 9th in homers with 80. On the mound, they have been very solid in the early going as they are ranked 8th in the league in ERA at 3.58 while also ranking 14th in WHIP at 1.28 and 20th in K’s with 538. The pen for the Cardinals ranks 26th in the league in ERA at 4.49.

Trends

San Diego is:

  • 16-39 in their last 55 road games vs. a team with a winning home record
  • 1-5 in Lauer’s last six starts on grass

St Louis is:

  • 5-1 in their last six home games vs. a left-handed starter
  • 8-2 in Weaver’s last 10 starts vs. a team with a losing record

The Cardinals are trying to keep pace in the National League Central, while the Padres are far from out of it in the National League West. this is an important series from both squads. The Cardinals have a big edge on the mound in this one and their offense is also far better than that of the Padres. Eric Lauer has gone 0-2 on the road so far and he has a 6.46 ERA in his road games. Yes, Luke Weaver is 0-2 here at home so far, but he has a far better 3.71 ERA in his home starts. The Cards have averaged just 4.21 rpg here at home for the year, but the Padres have put up just 3.52 rpg on the road. St Louis is the play here, especially since they have gone 46-16 in their last 62 home games in the series.

Pick: St Louis -1.5
