Cubs Looking to Gain Ground in NL Wild Card Picture

Chicago took two of three from the Angels as they rolled to a shutout win in the finale of that set Sunday afternoon at home. The Cubs entered Tuesday 42-49 on the season and sat in the basement of the NL Central, 11 games behind the Brewers for the top spot. They were 5.5 games behind the Padres for the final wild card spot in the National League. On Sunday, Chicago finished with seven hits with Miguel Amaya (run, RBI) the lone player with two in the contest. Michael Busch hit his 11th homer of the season for the Cubs in the contest. Hayden Wesneski (3-5) earned the win as he threw 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Hector Neris fanned Zach Neto with the bases loaded as the lone hitter he faced to record his 12th save.

Shota Imanaga is on the hill for the Cubs in this contest as he makes his 17th start of the season in this contest. He is 7-2 with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, 15 walks and 92 strikeouts over 91 innings of work this season. Imanaga didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came last Wednesday at home against the Phillies. He threw six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in an eventual 5-3 Cubs defeat. In his last three starts, Imanaga is 0-1 with a 9.60 ERA, a 1.73 WHIP, four walks and 14 strikeouts over 15 innings of work. Imanaga, his 15th career major league start, pitches against the Orioles for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career start at Oriole Park at Camden Yards as well.

Baltimore Seeking to Extend AL East Advantage

Baltimore won for the eighth time in their last 11 games as they won the rubber game of their series with the A’s Sunday afternoon. The Orioles entered Tuesday 57-33 and held a three-game advantage over the Yankees for the top spot in the AL East race. Against Oakland, Baltimore got two hits each from Gunnar Henderson (RBI) and Anthony Santander (two runs, RBI) in the game. Santander (his 23rd) and Heston Kjerstad (his third) each went deep in the contest. Grayson Rodriguez (11-3) earned the win as he threw six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel worked a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit with no walks and two strikeouts, for his 23rd save.

Corbin Burnes takes the hill for Baltimore in this one as he logs his 19th start of the season in this contest. He is 9-3 with a 2.32 ERA, a 1.021 WHIP, 25 walks and 101 strikeouts over 112.2 innings of work on the year. Burnes didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Thursday on the road against Seattle. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a game the Orioles eventually dropped 7-3. In his last three starts, Burnes is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, one walk and 16 strikeouts over 20 innings of work. Best Bets for Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

The Cubs entered Tuesday winners of three of their previous four games but dealing with the Orioles is a daunting task for any team. Baltimore is a deep team with power one through nine in the lineup and they can make you pay for the slightest mistake. Burnes has been solid after being acquired to be the front-of-the-rotation guy for the Orioles and he has familiarity with the Cubs having spent his career with Milwaukee. Imanaga might throw the Orioles off with his array of pitches but in the end, the Orioles are the better team and emerge victorious here to set them up for getaway day.

Prediction: Baltimore Orioles -168

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Chicago entered Tuesday having seen the under post a 48-40-3 mark in their 91 games on the season. The Cubs are tied for 19th in the majors by averaging 4.11 runs per game, though that number falls to 3.91 runs per game as the road team. Chicago has an average total of 8.48 runs per game on the season and that number climbs to 8.78 runs per contest as the visiting team. Baltimore has seen the over post a 47-34-9 mark on the season entering Tuesday’s action. The Orioles are 1st in the majors with an average of 5.16 runs per game. That number drops slightly to an average of five runs per game at home this season. Baltimore sees an average total of 9.13 runs per game this year, a number that climbs slightly to 8.83 runs a game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. With Burnes’ familiarity with Chicago and Imanaga’s ability to baffle opposing hitters, this game winds up under the total.

Prediction: Under 8.5
