Colorado's Offense Stalls in Series Opener

The Colorado Rockies have been struggling to score runs recently, and that was never more apparent than their first game of this series where they got shut out by the Reds. Colorado only managed four hits in the game, and only scored one run in their previous game against Kansas City. The Rockies have not reached five runs in any of their last seven games. Colorado got two hits from All-Star Ryan McMahon in the game, but still lost 6-0.

McMahon is the only player on the team who was named to the All-Star Game. He is their third baseman, but also takes the DH spot occasionally. He leads the team with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs while batting .274 from the third spot in the lineup. Ezequiel Tovar is their young shortstop, he leads the team in hits with 97 on the season, and is batting .263 on the year. Tovar has 12 homers and 37 RBIs while typically takes the second spot in the batting order. The only other player on the team with double-digit home runs is Brenton Doyle, he is their center fielder and has 11 home runs on the year, and also leads the team with 20 stolen bases. Doyle bats .273 and took the sixth spot in the lineup against Cincinnati. Their leadoff man was Charlie Blackmon, he played right field and has added four home runs and 29 RBIs on the year.

Kyle Freeland will make his 8th start of the season for Colorado. He is a 31-year old left-hander with an 0-3 record, but the team has won in each of his last two starts. His ERA is 6.62 to go with 21 strikeouts against 12 walks with four home runs allowed on the season. In his last start, Freeland pitched seven innings allowing just one earned run in a win over the Royals.

Reds Fall to Fourth

The Cincinnati Reds are caught in a tight race in the middle of the NL Central standings, and just fell to fourth after losing three of their last four games. The Reds surprisingly got swept at home by the Tigers, before grabbing a win in the first game of this series against Colorado. They are now a half game behind the Pirates for third in the division, but also only a half game ahead of the Cubs who sit in last. In Monday's game against the Rockies, Elly De La Cruz hit an RBI double in the eighth to help secure a 6-0 win.

The Reds also only received one invite to the All-Star Game, and it was for their star shortstop De La Cruz. He leads the team in home runs with 15, and has the most hits with 85 on the season while batting .251 from the second spot in the batting order. He leads the MLB in stolen bases by a wide margin, as he has 45 on the season and the second place player only has 29. Spencer Steer is their left fielder, he leads the team in RBIs with 57 while batting from the cleanup spot. Steer also has 13 homers with a .241 batting average. Jeimer Candelario is their third baseman, he has 14 home runs and 41 RBIs while batting third in the order.

Frankie Montas will make his 17th start of the season, he is a 31-year old right-hander with a 4-6 record, while the team has gone just 1-4 in his last five starts. His ERA is 4.19 to go with 62 strikeouts to 33 walks, with 10 home runs allowed on the season. In his last start, Montas took on the Yankees and pitched five innings allowing two earned runs in a win.

Best Bets for Colorado Rockies vs. Cincinnati Reds

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

The Rockies offense has completely stalled over the past two weeks. As noted earlier, they have not scored five runs in any of their last eight games, and they did not score at all in their first game against Cincinnati. They will be going against Frankie Montas, who has been in the starting rotation all season for the Reds. Montas has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last three starts, going up against much stronger opponents in the Yankees, Cardinals and Red Sox. The Rockies have nowhere near the firepower of those teams, and will struggle to manufacture any runs against Montas. The Reds have not been at the top of their game recently either, they beat up on the Reds in this series opener, but got swept by the Tigers at home just before that. The Reds have gone under in their last four games, and the Rockies have gone under in six of their last seven.

Take the under.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The Reds are heavy favorites on the moneyline at -175, so there is more value to take them on the runline, as they will easily dismantle the Rockies in this one. Colorado is on the road, where they are only 12-32 on the season, and they only managed four hits in the first game of the series against Cincy. Colorado has not been able to put runs on the board recently, it has been eight games since they scored five runs, which makes the runline even more appetizing for Cincy here. The Rockies are starting Kyle Freeland in this one, and he has yet to record a win as he is 0-3 on the year. Freeland is far worse on the road, as his ERA jumps all the way up to 11.64 in road games. Montas is starting for Cincinnati, and he is better at home than he his on the road according to his ERA, which gives another advantage to Cincy. The Reds are the better team, and need to make up ground after getting swept by the Tigers. They will do so by dominating the Rockies in this series.

Take the Reds on the runline.

Prediction: Cincinnati -1.5 (+115)
