New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays Prediction and Picks - July 10, 2024

Author: Eric P. Last Updated: July 10, 2024 Game Start: 6:50pm EST

The Tampa Bay Rays play host to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night in an AL East showdown from Tropicana Field. The Rays were able to grab a win the last time out, as they eye starting a winning streak of their own. For the Yankees, there hasn't been a worse team of late and with back-to-back losses coming into this one, they'll be hoping to simply get back into the win column. On Tuesday night, the Rays set the tone in the series with a 5-3 win and considering how tight this series has been over the years, this one could go either way.

Yankees Hoping To Stop Struggles

The Yankees started the season looking like World Series favorites over the first few months but a recent run of struggles has them simply looking to get back on track. They still have an impressive record, even with having one of the worst records since mid-June, but have slipped in the standings. They are three games behind Baltimore and if they can improve on that 3-7 record over their last ten games, they can catch Baltimore. Shifting confidence and momentum is key for this group right now, as they look to do that on Wednesday night.

According to MLB.com, Marcus Stroman will be getting the ball for the Yankees, as the righty looks to get back on track. A 7-4 record on the season and 3.58 ERA shows success but he has struggled of late. He's allowed at least three runs in each of his last four starts and only went five innings the last time out. With the bullpen struggling of late as well, it'll be key for him to give the Yankees a great base in this one.

The Yankees remain one of the most feared offenses, though they remain without two experienced bats in the middle of the lineup. Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton both remain out but there is plenty of experience elsewhere, with an average of .245 as a team. Aaron Judge (.308 average, 32 HRs, 83 RBI) continues to look like the best player in the league when healthy and with Juan Soto (.291 average) coming on of late too, those two are forming into one of the league's best duos. On the road, the bats will need to start off hot early for this group to find success.

Rays Coming Off Series Opening Win

The Rays have been one of the American League's better teams over the last handful of seasons but with a slow start in 2024, they are hoping to find their stride in mid-summer. They are in fourth place in the AL East, sitting 12 games behind the leaders in Baltimore and nine games behind New York. It has actually been the home record that has let them down this season, where they have a losing record. Considering home games against New York have always seemed to feel more like road games, those woes might carry onto into Wednesday. Tuesday did see them start the series with a win though, as they look to improve on their .500 record over their last ten games.

Zach Eflin will get the ball for the Rays, according to MLB.com, as the righty ace looks to find consistency. He has a 5-5 record over his last ten games, with a 4.19 ERA to show, though struggled the last time out. He went five innings but allowed five runs, which came as a surprise after pitching a six-inning shutout the last time out. Against an impressive New York lineup, he'll need to be sharp in this one.

The offense could have their hands full as they look to keep pace with the Yankees, especially if New York gets off to a hot start. The Rays average over a full run less than New York per game. The lack of power has been a cause of pain and even at home, that has been a struggle. Yandy Diaz (.270 average) leads the way, while Isaac Paredes (15 home runs, 50 RBI) provides the power. With no injuries to worry about in the lineup, it'll be key for this group to start to find consistency.

Best Bets for New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

Even though New York has been struggling of late, there's no doubt that they have the pieces to find success in this one. They have Stroman on the mound, who overall has been successful, and considering Eflin is on the other side, the offense is primed to score runs. Judge is putting together another MVP-type season and with Soto emerging in confidence of late too, these two will hardly be stopped in this one. Both teams need a win to make sure they are moving in the right way but with the depth of New York's lineup, they are poised for a bounce-back night in this one.

Prediction: New York (-108)

While both lineups have found success at times, the under will hit in this one. Stroman and Eflin have the potential to be efficient arms, while Tampa Bay could continue to struggle on the offensive end. They lack quite a bit of power and without consistency in the lineup, it has been a challenge for them to score runs. For the Yankees, they have their own injuries to be concerned about and while Judge and Soto can do enough to find a win, they are unlikely to put up a crooked number. After only eight combined runs in the opener, a similar output is expected in game two.

Prediction: Under 8
