It’s the conclusion of a brief interleague set on the diamond as a pair of teams lock up in search of a win in southern California. The Seattle Mariners are on the road as they make the trip to take on the San Diego Padres in the final game of a two-game series Wednesday evening. Seattle dropped the rubber game of their three-game series with Toronto at home Sunday, falling 5-4 in 10 innings. San Diego dropped two of three to the Diamondbacks at home as they were drubbed 9-1 Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of that set. Seattle Trying to Hold On to AL West Lead

Seattle fell for the sixth time in eight games as they were beaten by the Blue Jays in the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at home. The Mariners entered Tuesday 49-43 on the season and held a two-game edge on the Astros for the top spot in the AL West. On Sunday, Seattle got two hits each from Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver (run, three RBI) though it wasn’t enough. Garver (his 12th) and Victor Robles (his first) each went deep in the loss. The Mariners were just two of 12 with runners in scoring position and left 15 runners on base in the loss. George Kirby didn’t factor in the decision as he threw six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Collin Snider (0-1) took the loss as he allowed one run (none earned) on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in one inning of relief.

Bryce Miller takes the hill for his 19th start of the season for the Mariners in this contest. He comes in 6-7 with a 3.84 ERA, a 1.078 WHIP, 29 walks and 97 strikeouts over 103 innings of work on the season. Miller didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Orioles at home Thursday. He threw 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a game the Mariners went on to win 7-3. In his last three starts, Miller is 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, three walks and 15 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work. Miller, in his 44th career major start, pitches against the Padres for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career start at Petco Park.

Padres Fighting for Wild Card Spot in Crowded NL Playoff Field

San Diego was drubbed in the rubber game of their three-game home set with the Diamondbacks Sunday afternoon in their most recent game. The Padres entered Tuesday 49-45 on the season and stood second in the NL West, 7.5 games behind the Dodgers for the top spot. They held the final wild card spot in the National League by 2.5 games over the Diamondbacks. On Sunday, San Diego finished with just four hits in the contest with no player having more than one. Jurickson Profar (his 14th) hit a solo homer to account for the lone Padres run in the contest. Dylan Cease (7-8) took the loss as he allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Michael King takes the ball for his 20th appearance and 19th start of the season for the Padres in this contest. He is 7-5 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.267 WHIP, 41 walks and 120 strikeouts over 105 innings of work on the year. King earned the win in his last start, which came against the Rangers on the road Thursday. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a 3-1 Padres victory. In his last three starts, King is 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, four walks and 19 strikeouts over 17.1 innings of work. King makes his third career appearance, first start, against the Mariners in this contest. He has no record with a 3.38 ERA, 1.875 WHIP, two walks and four strikeouts over 2.2 innings of work against them. King is 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA, a 1.383 WHIP, 20 walks and 62 strikeouts over 42.2 innings of work in eight career starts at Petco Park.

Best Bets for Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Both teams are in playoff position as they kicked off this series Tuesday night but there are issues on both teams at this point. Seattle continues to struggle to put runs on the board with any kind of consistency while the Padres are dealing with pitching issues. Yu Darvish is on the restricted list while Joe Musgrove is on the 60-day IL, putting them down two of their top three starters. With that said, King is a strikeout artist and the Mariners are known to whiff at a rather hefty rate, leading the majors with 10.33 punchouts a game. With Seattle sputtering at the dish and King punching out hitters, plus the Padres being at home, look for San Diego to take this one.

Prediction: San Diego Padres -126

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Seattle entered Tuesday’s action having seen the under post a 48-38-6 mark in their 92 games this season. The Mariners are 27th in the majors in runs per game as they put up an average of 3.80 runs per game though that climbs slightly to an average of 4.05 runs per game on the road. Seattle has seen an average total of 7.57 runs per game on the year and that number rises to 8.66 runs per contest as the road team. San Diego has seen the over post a 51-41-2 mark in their 94 games entering Tuesday’s action. The Padres are tied for 11th in the majors with 4.65 runs per game though that number slips slightly to 4.63 runs per game at home. San Diego has an average total of 9.05 runs per contest and that bumps up to 9.55 runs per game at home. The total may be a little too high here and as a result, lean toward the under in this contest.

Prediction: Under 7.5
