Blue Jays Looking to Build AL East Advantage

Toronto won their sixth straight and their eighth in their last nine games as they took the opening game of this set in walk-off fashion Friday night. The Blue Jays entered Saturday 50-38 on the year and hold a two-game lead over the Yankees and Rays for the top spot in the AL East. On Friday night, Toronto had five hits with George Springer (run) the lone player with two in the game. Myles Straw scored the winning run in walk-off fashion on a throwing error by pitcher Sam Bachman. Eric Lauer threw six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts, but didn’t factor in the decision. Chad Green (3-2) earned the win as he threw a scoreless 10th inning, allowing no hits or walks while striking out one.

Kevin Gausman is on the bump for the Blue Jays as he makes his 18th start of the season in this contest. He is 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA, a 1.111 WHIP, 29 walks and 93 strikeouts over 99 innings of work on the year. Gausman didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Yankees at home Tuesday. He threw five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in a 12-5 Blue Jays victory. Insiders Status:

Rating:

Toronto has been on fire of late, pushing into the top spot in the AL East with their hot run. The Blue Jays are clicking offensively and their pitching has been better of late. Anderson earned a win in his last start but that merely doubled his win total on the season. He has had no success against the Blue Jays in his career and has given up 15 homers on the season to date. Gausman was sound enough in keeping the Yankees in check in his last start and, facing an Angels squad that has struggled to be consistent offensively, you have to give the Blue Jays the edge here.

Rating:

Los Angeles has seen the over hit in 45 of their 86 games, with one push, this season entering Saturday. The Angels are 17th in the majors by averaging 4.30 runs per game though they allow 4.84 runs per game, giving them an average of 9.14 runs per game. Los Angeles puts up 4.26 runs per game on the road, while allowing 4.96 runs per game, giving them an average total of 9.22 runs per contest. Toronto has seen the over post a 49-38-1 mark on the year entering Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays are tied for 10th in the majors with 4.60 runs per game and that number jumps up to 5.39 runs per game at Rogers Centre. Toronto has an average total of 9.09 runs per game but that number climbs to 9.87 runs per game at home. Lean toward the under in this contest as Gausman slows the Angels while the Blue Jays have a more pedestrian day at the plate.
