The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks will continue a four-game NL West series Saturday night from Chase Field. The Dodgers will give the starting call to 23-year old left-hander Julio Urias, and the Diamondbacks will counter with 26-year old right-hander Luke Weaver. L.A. won the 2019 season series 11-8 and tallied a 6-3 win in the series opener on Thursday night.

Urias Makes Second Start, Dodgers' Pitching Dazzles

Julio Urias is hunting for his first victory of the season in this one. Urias pitched well in his first start, limiting the Giants to one run in five innings, although he did walk three batters in a game the Dodgers lost by a 3-1 mark. The young left-hander has a ton of upside and earned a sharp 2.49 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in just under 80 innings with the Dodgers last season. Urias held the Diamondbacks to one run in seven innings in the only meeting in 2019 which was his only career outing against Arizona.

Max Muncy had trouble against the D-Backs pitching in 2019, recording a .185 average with 18 strikeouts, so it will be interesting to see how he performs in the rest of this series after going deep in Thursday's series-opening triumph. The 29-year old slugger will strike out a fair amount but can go deep at any time. He has three homers along with four RBIs this season.

The Dodgers rotation has been hit with injuries to Clayton Kershaw and now Alex Wood. Their pitching depth has been on full display in their strong start to the season and currently owns a 1.03 team WHIP. L.A. split four games with the Giants in their first series and have earned three straight wins entering Friday.

The Dodgers are scoring an average of 5.29 runs per game, ranking them 8th in the big leagues. They hold a stellar 2.15 team ERA, good for third in all of baseball.

Weaver Rocked in Season Debut, Offense Slumps

The D-Backs will have Luke Weaver take the hill for the second time of the season in this one. Weaver was clobbered for six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings in San Diego in his season debut and was tagged with the loss as a result. The fifth-year right-hander was tremendous in his 12 starts last season, registering a stifling 2.94 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP and a 4-3 record. He squandered five runs (four earned) in his lone start against the Dodgers last year and has allowed 13 runs (eight earned) in nine career innings against the division rivals.

Nick Amhed was productive against the Dodgers last season, accumulating 12 RBI’s in 63 at-bats. The 30-year old shortstop is coming off a career-year in 2019, bashing 19 homers along with 82 RBI’s. Ahmed is struggling right now, hitting an atrocious .183 and has yet to drive in a run.

Arizona has a solid lineup but has not been able to manufacture any offense. They rank near the bottom of the Majors in most offensive categories and quietly find themselves in a hole in the NL West.

The D-Backs slumping offense ranks down at 29th with an average of 2.86 runs per game. They enter with a 5.34 team ERA, pegging them 23rd in the Major Leagues.

Rating:

I expect the Dodgers to come away with a road win. Dodgers’ starter Julio Urias is a talented young pitcher who put up a sparkling 2.49 ERA in 2019 and conceded just one run in five innings in his first start of the season. Arizona is struggling mightily at the plate through the first week of the season and they have scored four or fewer runs in each of the first six games heading into Friday’s action.

Furthermore, D-Backs starter Luke Weaver has been smacked around by the Dodgers in his nine career innings, serving up 13 runs (8 earned) along with four home runs.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

Look for a low scoring game. This pitching matchup has the makings of a pitchers’ duel. Julio Urias should be able to neutralize an offense that has done nothing at the plate so far. He fired seven innings of one-run ball in his lone start against Arizona last season. The under is 5-1 in the Diamondbacks’ last six games overall and that trend should resume in this one.

Prediction: Under

The Dodgers' pitching staff should come through with a complete performance. I like Urias to shut down Arizona’s bats along with a terrific bullpen that holds a minuscule 1.14 ERA so far this season. Arizona ranks near the bottom of the Majors in most hitting categories and has only hit two home runs.

Prediction: Diamondbacks Team Total Under

First Five Innings Prop Prediction

I am selecting Cody Bellinger to hit a home run. Bellinger is due for a big game, and he bashed nine big flys against Arizona last season. Also, he has hit two homers in five career at-bats against D-Backs’ starter Luke Weaver.

Prediction: Cody Bellinger to Hit a Home Run
