Major league Baseball action within the National League West and we will see the St Louis cardinals duke it out with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. This is game one of a three-game series with a doubleheader on deck for tomorrow.

Pitching Probables: Taking the hill for the Cardinals will be Jack Flaherty (1-0, 2.57 ERA) and he will be opposed by Brett Anderson (0-0, 0.00 ERA).

(This game has been postponed due to more positive COVID-19 tests).

Cards Are Searching For Some Offense

The St Louis Cardinals began their season with two straight wins against the Pittsburgh Pirates and they scored 14 runs in the two games. Since then, the Cardinals have lost three straight games in a row and they have notched a total of four runs in those games. That just won’t get it done. In their last game, they faced the Twins on the road and lost by a score of 3-0. They had just three hits in the contest with Paul Goldschmidt, Yadier Molina, and Dexter Fowler each having the hits. The Cards need to get their offense back on track but it will be tough for them in this series as the Brewers can pitch. Taking the loss against the Twins was Daniel Ponce de Leon, who allowed three ERs on two hits and three walks with eight Ks in 3.2 innings of work.

Getting the nod for St Louis will be Jack Flaherty and he won his first start of the year. In that game, he allowed two ERs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work in a 5-3 win over the Pirates. Last year, he was 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 33 starts overall, including 4-4 with a 3.13 ERA in 17 starts on the road. In his career, Flaherty has gone 8-9 with a 3.56 ERA in 36 starts on the road and 8-1 with a 0.90 ERA in 11 starts during the month of August, plus 2-4 with a 4.56 ERA in 10 starts against the Brewers, including 0-2 with a 4.68 ERA in five starts here.

2020’s Stats & Rankings: The Cardinals come in ranked 24th in scoring at 3.60 rpg, 23rd in hitting at .217, and 20th in homers with six. On the mound, they are ranked 11th in ERA at 3.77 and 2nd in WHIP at 0.93.

Brewers Blank The Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers have gotten off to a mediocre start as they have gone just 3-3 through their first six games. Still, they are just a game behind the Cubs in the National League Central. Milwaukee started by losing two of three to the cubs but they rebounded by taking two of three against the Pirates. In their last game, the Brewers blanked the Pirates by a score of 3-0, and this after Pittsburgh scored 13 runs in the first two games. Brandon Woodruff had a stellar game as he allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 in 6.1 innings of work. Woodruff is now 1-1 with a 1.59 ERA on the year. Ben Gamel (1) hit a two-run homer while Keston Hiura (2) had a solo homer to supply the offense for the Brewers.

Toeing the rubber for the Brewers will be Brett Anderson, who went 13-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 31 starts for the A’s last year, including 4-6 with a 4.67 ERA in 15 starts in his home games. In his career, he has gone 24-30 with a 4.35 ERA in 88 games (81 starts) in his home games and 10-13 with a 3.97 ERA in 34 games (33 starts) during August, plus 0-2 with a 2.63 ERA in two starts against the Cards. Anderson is 0-0 with a 1.59 ERA in one career start in this park.

2020’s Stats & Rankings: The Brewers are ranked 22nd in scoring at 4.00 rpg, 27th in hitting at .198, and 26th in homers with five. On the mound, they are ranked 14th in ERA at 3.91 and 3rd in WHIP at 1.08.

Insiders Status:

I will be going with the Brewers in this one. Jack Flaherty pitched a very good game in his last outing but still, the offense is a mess at the moment. Brett Anderson has a 2.63 ERA in his career against the Cards and a decent 3.97 ERA during the month of August. Jack Flaherty has some strong numbers during the month of August but he is also 0-2 with a 4.68 ERA in five career starts in this park. The Brewers have not been a great offensive team but they should scratch across enough runs to pick up a win here. The Brewers are the better overall team here and with the offensive woes that the Cards are having at the moment, they should win this one.

Prediction: Milwaukee

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I will take the Under in this one. The Brewers have not been a great offensive team and the Cardinals are 2nd in the league in WHIP. Jack Flaherty does not have great numbers against the Brewers but he does have an 0.90 ERA in 11 career starts during the month of August. The Cards have scored a total of four runs in their last three games and while Brett Anderson is 0-2 against them, he has a 2.63 ERA in those games. This is a big game for both teams and with a solid pitching matchup along with quiet bats, we should get ourselves a nice 3-2 type game.

Prediction: Under
