Minnesota and Detroit duel it out on Friday night at Comerica Park. The Twins continue to fall out of realistic playoff contention with more losses against Cleveland. The Tigers have now lost six straight games with sweeps against a couple of AL West teams.
Twins longshot postseason hopes grow further
Minnesota needed the victories against Cleveland to hang on by a thread in the postseason race, but they’ve lost to them four times in a little over a week. Being 11 games back heading into the second weekend of August, hopes are pretty much crushed. The offense was limited to just five total runs in the last three-game series against the Indians. Reliever Matt Belise (7.71 ERA) made an appearance on Monday, but now on the 10-day DL with a knee injury.
Probable starter: Right-hander Ervin Santana (0-0, 6.14 ERA)
It hasn’t been a very smooth beginning for Santana this season. Over his three starts on the season, he’s given up 10 earned runs and 20 hits over 14.2 total innings. He’s had no personal decisions in these games, but at least the ratio is an adequate nine strikeouts to four walks.
Tigers don’t score in half of their losing streak
Detroit looks like they’re already ready for the offseason. Over their current losing skid against Oakland and the Los Angeles Angels heading into their upcoming series, they allowed six or more runs in four of those defeats and were shut out three times. Over their last 10 games, the offense has collected a paltry two runs per nine innings. First baseman John Hicks (.260 avg) suffered a groin injury against the Angels and is currently on the 10-day DL.
Probable starter: Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (4-4, 4.31 ERA)
Zimmermann has fallen off in the second part of the season and ended up having a cruddy July. Over five starts, he gave up 15 earned runs and 33 total hits through 29.2 innings. He gave up two runs (both homers) on six hits against Oakland and picked up his fourth straight loss.
- 4-1 in their last 5 home games against teams with a losing record
- 5-1 on the Under in their last 6 overall
- 10-25 in their last 35 road games
- 5-2 on the Under in their last 7 road games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
This is a great opportunity for Zimmermann to get out of his funk. There will certainly be a deflating period for Minnesota now that they’re essentially out of the postseason race and Santana just hasn’t found his rhythm yet on the mound.
Prediction: Detroit -105
Full-Game Total Pick
Even though both of these pitching staffs have been horrendous over the past week, posting a combined 10.85 ERA over the last five games, this is an optimal under selection. Zimmermann is due for a good appearance and his team is really struggling on offense.
Prediction: Under 9
