Tampa Bay and Toronto start their series on Friday night at the Rogers Centre. The Rays haven’t had a lot of success lately dropping four of their last five games. The Blue Jays pitching has been atrocious over their last three games.
Rookie Bauers starts off strong against Orioles
Tampa Bay has split their first two games against Baltimore after getting swept against the Chicago White Sox last weekend. Both teams have scored eight runs through the series so far. Second baseman Joey Wendle (.292 avg) continues to be a reliable bat in the lineup and has registered seven hits and four RBIs over his last five games. First baseman Jake Bauers has had two hits and two RBIs so far in this series.
Probable starter: Left-hander Blake Snell (12-5, 2.27 ERA)
Snell’s long winning streak was halted against Minnesota, but he returned to form against the Chicago White Sox last Saturday. He gave up just one earned run on three hits through four innings, exiting after just 59 total pitches. He received a no-decision in the effort.
Blue Jays bullpen collapses in past three games
After three straight games where Toronto was very impressive against Seattle, the streaky Blue Jays’ pitching has struggled once again. They allowed just six total runs in the first three games against the Mariners, but now in their most recent three games, which includes two games against Boston, they’ve allowed a whopping 26 runs. The bullpen is at most of the fault, which has a crazy 11.40 ERA over their last five games.
Probable starter: Right-hander Marco Estrada (5-8, 4.65 ERA)
Estrada was excellent against top competition last Saturday. He gave up just one earned run on one hit through seven innings against Seattle. It was enough to pull off a 5-1 victory. It was also his first personal win since taking down Washington on June 16th.
- 0-5 in their last 5 home games
- 3-7 in Estrada’s last 10 Friday starts
- 4-1 in their last 5 during game 1 of a series
- 8-1 in their last 9 against Estrada’s starts for the Blue Jays
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
There just hasn’t been a lot of success for Estrada on the mound, and for whatever reason he seems to have a curse when he’s taking on the Rays. It’s only made an easier pick when you consider how successful Snell has been recently.
Prediction: Tampa Bay -121
Full-Game Total Pick
While it looked like Toronto was goring to shore things up with their pitching staff, they’ve seen a complete collapse in recent games. It doesn’t help that Estrada has posted a 5.56 ERA over his last three games. As good as he was last time out, pick the over on the total here.
Prediction: Over 8.5
