The red-hot Cardinals get set to take on the Colorado Rockies in the middle game of a three-game set on Wednesday night. The Cardinals have vaulted into first-place in the NL Central while the Rockies find themselves in last-place in the NL West Division. The pitching matchup on Wednesday night will feature a pair of left-handers as Jose Quintana (3-5, 3.39) of the Cardinals takes on Kyle Freeland (7-7, 4.56) of the Rockies. First pitch is scheduled for 8:40pm EST.

Cardinals Seeing Red

The St. Louis Cardinals are red-hot and come into this series riding high following a sweep of the vaunted New York Yankees over the weekend. Heading into Tuesday night's game, the Cardinals were 5-0 since the August 3rd trade deadline that netted the team two key starting pitchers: Jordan Montgomery and Jose Quintana. Each has earned a victory during the streak, providing the Cardinals with instant dividends. On Tuesday night in the series opener, starting pitcher Miles Mikolas was tagged for 14 hits and 10 runs as the Cardinals win streak came to a crashing halt in a 16-5 loss to the Rockies.

Former Rockies' great Nolan Arenado returns home after a scintillating week that earned him Player of the Week honors. Arenado has hit 136 career home runs as a Rockies player and brings his home run stroke with him after hitting four over the past week. The Cardinals have hit .252 over this recent seven-game winning streak and belted 11 home runs over that span. The thin Colorado air should serve them well over the next three games. On the mound on Wednesday night will be one of the Cardinals' newest acquisitions, Jose Quintana. Quintana must feel like he's gone from the outhouse to the penthouse in transitioning from the Pirates' run-deprived offense to the powerful Cardinals lineup. In his first appearance for the Cards, Quintana went six innings and allowed one run and one hit in picking up his 3rd win of the season and first for the Cardinals. Quintana faced the Rockies just under a month ago while pitching for the Pirates and was roughed up. Quintana went five innings while allowing seven hits and six runs.

Rock Bottom

A rough weekend in Arizona has the Rockies settled into last place in the NL West Division. The Rockies lost two of three games to the Diamondbacks and ended the weekend two full games behind Arizona and firmly in last place. Coming into this series, the Rockies have now lost seven of their last nine games as the team starts to play out the string in the second half of the season. In Tuesday night's series opener, the Rockies proved that there really is no place like home as they pounded out 22 hits and 16 runs in a 16-5 win. C.J. Cron had a double, home run and 5 RBI, Randal Grichuk went 5-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI and Brendan Rodgers went 4-for-5 with three runs scored in the route of the Cardinals.

The Rockies are just 3-7 in their last ten games and 6-14 in their last 20 games. The Rockies are happy to be back at home, with the team sporting a 30-27 mark at the friendly confines of Coors Field heading into Tuesday night. The Rockies' home and away splits, particularly at the offensive end, have been particularly sharp this season with a near 50-point improvement in the team's batting average at home vs. the road. Left-hander Kyle Freeland returns home hoping to reap the benefits of the Rockies' improved numbers at Coors Field. Freeland is 4-3 in 11 home starts this season with a 5.55 ERA compared with his 3.53 road ERA. Freeland has gone 6-2 in his last eight decisions with three of those wins coming at Coors Field. He has not yet faced the Cardinals this season.

Insiders Status:

Quintana will certainly benefit from a much-improved lineup as he transitions from Pittsburgh to St. Louis. He will also have a stronger bullpen behind him and can leave it all out there realizing he doesn't have to go as deep into games with the Cardinals. Quintana was roughed up a bit in his one start at Coors this year with the Pirates. In his career, Quintana is 2-2 at Coors Field pitching for three different teams. Freeland looks like two completely different pitchers at home vs. on the road. He is allowing more than 5.5 runs per game at Coors Field this year and allowing more than two runs less per game on the road. He now runs into a hot Cardinals lineup that is 13-9 vs. left-handers this season and 38-21 against teams that are under .500. Look for the hot Cardinals' bats to exploit Colorado pitching and give Quintana enough of a cushion to pick up his second straight win for the Birds.

Take the Cardinals with the money line.

Prediction: Cardinals -168

Insiders Status:

Both pitchers have been subpar at Coors Field this year, with Freeland having a much bigger body of work to support that. I expect Freeland to surrender at least six or more runs against a Cardinals lineup that has hit 11 home runs in their last seven games. The Cardinals are 7th in MLB in runs per game and the Rockies are scoring over five runs per game at home this season. Given the thin air, the hot Cardinals' bats and the Rockies' offense at home this year, I fully expect this series to be a shootout and certainly this game. If Tuesday night's game total is any indication, the total should cover easily in this one as well.

Take the over, 11.5 runs.

Prediction: Over 11.5
