San Francisco Giants (46-70; 55-51-10 O/U) vs. Washington Nationals (67-45; 56-52-4 O/U)

MLB: Friday, August 11, 2017 at 7:05pm EST

Line: Washington -170/San Francisco +153

Total: 10

The Washington Nationals will clash with the San Francisco Giants in the three game series opener Friday night from Nationals Park. The Giants will give the nod to 26-year old right-hander Chris Stratton, and the Nationals will counter with 33-year old right-hander Edwin Jackson. The Nationals recorded a three game sweep over the Giants earlier this season.

Stratton Searching for First Win of Season

Chris Stratton will make his sixth appearance and third start of the season, searching for his first win. Stratton held his own in his previous start, allowing three runs (two earned), in five innings to the Diamondbacks, and finished with the no decision in a game the Giants won. The rookie right-hander has looked better in his last two starts, however, he has conceded a total of 15 runs (14 earned) in his 19 innings pitched on the season. Stratton is having some issues with his command, issuing 12 walks. Hunter Pence is swinging a hot bat, smashing three home runs along with eight RBI’s to go with a .333 average so far this month. The 34-year old right fielder is having a mediocre season, currently hitting .251 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI’s. Pence has collected 10 homers along with 31 RBI’s in 65 career games against the Nationals.

The Giants are only averaging 4.02 runs per game, ranking them down at 29th in the Majors, and are hitting .246 as a team. The San Francisco pitching has been average, posting a 4.54 team ERA, placing them 17th overall.

Jackson Targets Second Straight Home Win

Edwin Jackson will make his eighth appearance and fifth start of the season, aiming for his third win. Jackson conceded four runs in five innings to the Cubs in his previous start and was charged with the loss. The veteran right-hander has pitched well through four starts with the Nationals this season and owns a 4.34 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP to go with a 2-2 record in 29 innings pitched. He has had trouble with the Giants in his career, posting an ugly 5.03 ERA with a 4-4 record in 11 career starts. Hunter Pence is 5 for 20 against Jackson, while Buster Posey is 1 for 15, and Brandon Crawford is 3 for 11. Ryan Zimmerman has done good damage against the Giants this season, collecting a hit in 5 of 12 at bats with two homers and five RBI’s. The 32-year old first baseman is having an excellent season, hitting .310 with 26 home runs and 81 RBI’s. Zimmerman has driven in five runs this month.

The Nationals dangerous lineup is currently averaging 5.48 runs per game, good for second in the Majors, and feature a .275 team batting average. The Washington pitching has been solid, boosting a 4.11 team ERA, placing them ninth in the Major Leagues.

Trends:

The San Francisco Giants are:

  • over is 8-1 in their last 9 games following an off day.
  • over is 6-2 in their last 8 road games.

The Washington Nationals are:

  • over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.
  • over is 4-1 in Jackson’s last 5 starts against the NL West.
  • over is 15-7-3 in their last 25 Friday games.

I am taking the over in this contest. Stratton has been shaky this season, conceding 15 runs in his 19 innings pitched to go with 12 walks, so I expect the Nationals to put some crooked numbers on the board. Furthermore, Edwin Jackson owns a poor 5.03 ERA against the Giants and right now the Giants are swinging the bats much better, averaging 5.1 runs over their last ten games, making the over an attractive option.
