Rockies Are Trying To Stay Atop The Wildcard Standings
The Colorado Rockies have had a very good year so far and they currently have a one game lead over Arizona for the top spot in the National League Wildcard race. Colorado has been one of the bigger surprises this year, but they did just take a 6-3 loss in game one of this series and have now lost three of their last four games, scoring a total of nine runs in the four game. This is not a team that has many issues on offense this year, but they are in a slump right. They will really need to get that offense going again as their pitching just isn’t good enough to carry them. Even Greg Holland has struggled of late as he has blown two saves in a row, allowing six ERs in just 1.2 innings of work in the process. He has been a big part of their success this year and they will need him to get back on point as well. Take the hill for the Rockies in this one will be German Marquez and he has gone 9-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 19 starts on the year, including 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts and 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 10 starts on the road. Marquez is now 10-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 22 career starts overall and he is 4-3 with a 4.26 ERA in 13 games 911 starts) on the road in his career, plus 4-0 with a 23.2 ERA in nine career day starts. This will be his first meeting with the Marlins.
Colorado has been strong on offense this year so far as they come in ranked 3rd in the league in scoring, putting up 5.22 rpg, while also ranking 3rd in hitting at .274 and 18th in homers with 136. On the mound, they have been poor so far as they come in ranked 22nd in the league in ERA at 4.66, while also ranking 22nd in WHIP at 1.39.
Dietrich, Telis Lift Fish Over Rockies
The Miami Marlins are not going to the postseason, so they have to try and play spoiler the rest of the season to the teams that are looking to get in the postseason. They won’t hurt the rockies’ chances in this series, but still, they can hope to possibly have them fall from the top spot in the NL Wildcard standings. In game one of this series, the game was tied at 3-3 until Christian Yelich put them ahead with a single in the bottom of the 8th and they Tomas Telis followed that up with a two-run triple for insurance. Also having a good game was Giancarlo Stanton, who had two hits in the game, including his 40th homer of the year, which leads the league. He now has 14 homers since the All-Star break. Miami has gone 28-28 at home for the year so far. Toeing the slab for the Marlins in this one will be Vance Worley and he has gone 2-2 with a 4.82 ERA in 15 games on the year overall, including 2-2 with a 4.86 ERA in seven games as a starter. Worley is 31-29 with a 3.95 ERA in 92 starts in his career overall and he is 5-11 with a 3.96 ERA in 50 games (30 starts) in the daytime, plus he is 1-1 with a 4.17 ERA in 11 games (five starts) here at Marlins Park in his career, while against the Rockies he has gone 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three games (two starts).
The Marlins have been a bit below average on offense so far as they come in ranked 16th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.67 rpg, while also ranking 4th in hitting at .264 and 17th in homers with 138. On the mound, they have been a bit below average so far as they come in ranked 20th in the league in ERA at 4.60, while also ranking 20th in WHIP at 1.39.
- 7-3 in their last 10 vs. the National League East
- None Available
The Rockies took a tough loss in game one and will be looking to bounce back in this one, but it will not be easy as the Marlins have shown that they have not stopped playing hard this year and would like to play the role of spoiler. Despite that, the Marlins are at a disadvantage on the mound and I feel that will be their undoing in this one. German Marquez has been one of the better starters for the Rockies this year and he has been pitching better of late as he is 1-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts. He is 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA on the road, while Vance Worley has gone just 2-2 with a 4.86 ERA in seven games as a starter this year. Stanton is hot but he has never seen Marquez, who has the stuff to shut him down. The Rockies have the better offense and starter in this game and should walk away with a nice win in this one.
