MLB: Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 7:10pm EST
Line: Arizona -138/Minnesota +128
The Minnesota Twins will square off with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of a three game interleague series Saturday night from Target Field. The Diamondbacks will hand the ball to 33-year old right-hander Zack Greinke, and 23-year old right-hander Jose Berrios will take the mound for the Twins.
Greinke Tosses Gem in 14th Victory of Season
Zack Greinke will get the nod for the 25th time of the season, hunting for his second straight win. Greinke was flawless in his previous start, hurling 6.2 scoreless innings against the Astros, and earned the win to bring his record to 14-5. The 6-foot-2 ace is having a tremendous season, currently featuring a 3.01 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in 155.2 innings pitched. He has had some issues with the Twins in his career, posting a 5-8 record with a 4.50 ERA in 124 innings, however he has not seen a whole lot of their current lineup. Joe Mauer is 18 for 50 with eight RBI’s against Greinke, and Brian Dozier is 1 for 10. David Peralta has been very productive over the past week, registering six hits along with five RBI’s over his last five games. The 30-year old right-fielder is having a very consistent season, currently sporting a .302 average with 12 home runs and 41 RBI’s. Peralta has driven in seven runs this month.
The Diamondbacks are scoring an average of 4.91 runs per game, good for seventh in the Major Leagues, and feature a .255 team batting average. The Arizona pitching has been strong all year, sporting a 3.62 team ERA, ranking them second in the Majors.
Berrios Tagged by Tigers in Worst Start of Season
Jose Berrios will make his 18th start of the season, looking to get back on a track after a few rough outings. Berrios surrendered six runs in 3.1 innings to the Tigers in his previous start, and managed to escape with the no decision in a game the Twins lost. The young right-hander has been roughed up in two straight starts and currently sits at 10-5 with a 4.27 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 99 innings logged on the year. Berrios, who will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time, owns a 7-0 record in day games compared to a 3-5 record in night games. Eddie Rosario is the hottest Twins hitter right now, smashing five home runs along with 10 RBI’s over his last 11 games, and owns a .351 average this month. The 25-year old left fielder is having a strong season, sporting a .297 average with 16 home runs and 46 RBI’s. Rosario owns a terrific .328 average at Target Field this season.
The Twins are currently scoring an average of 4.63 runs per game, ranking them 19th in the Majors, and own a .254 team batting average. The Minnesota pitching has been below average, registering a 4.77 team ERA, positioning them 25th in the Major Leagues.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are:
- 10-3 in Greinke’s last 13 starts.
- 6-0 in their last 6 games against the AL Central.
- 8-2 in their last 10 interleague games.
The Minnesota Twins are:
- 1-5 in their last 6 games against the NL West.
- 17-40 in their last 57 interleague games against a team with a winning record.
- 28-57 in their last 85 games against a team with a winning record.
I am taking the Diamondbacks in this contest. Berrios has struggled over his last few starts, allowing a total of 16 runs over his last four starts (19.1 innings), so I would not feel comfortable with him going against the Diamondbacks dangerous offense. In addition, Greinke continues to excel, posting a dazzling 2.78 ERA over his last nine starts, so I expect him to come through with another strong outing.
