The Milwaukee Brewers (63-54, 48-69 RL, 57-51-9 O/U) clash with the Chicago Cubs (49-67, 59-57 RL, 50-58-8 O/U) as the NL Central foes open a three-game series on Friday afternoon. The Brewers will have Aaron Ashby on the mound. The Cubs will reply with Keegan Thompson. The Cubs lead the season series 7-6.

Ashby Starts, Brewers Open Road Trip

Aaron Ashby will make his 23rd outing of the season. Ashby was solid in his latest effort, limiting a tough Cardinals lineup to only two runs in six innings, resulting in a no-decision in a bout the Brewers lost. The young left-hander has some issues with his control and enters with a 4.24 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP accompanied by a 2-10 record in 91.1 innings. Ashby has conceded only runs in 7.2 innings against the Cubs this season and has allowed nine runs (six earned) in 13.1 career innings.

The Brewers need to take advantage of a bit of an easier portion of the schedule. They now have the Cubs and Pirates in three of their next four series. They won two of four meetings against the Dodgers this week and now trail the Cardinals by three games atop the division.

Tyrone Taylor has been productive against the Cubs this season, driving in six runs in seven games. The 28-year-old is slumping at the plate, amassing a horrible .570 OPS so far this month, and now has 12 big flies with 40 RBIs and a .686 OPS on the season.

The Brewers are averaging 4.50 runs per game, ranking them 10th overall. The pitching staff is carrying a 3.80 team ERA, good for 11th in the big leagues.

Thompson Seeks 10th Win

Keegan Thompson will get the nod for the 25th time on Friday. Thompson could not find a groove in his latest effort, squandering four runs in only 1.2 innings against the Reds, but was able to escape with the no-decision in a Cubs loss. The young right-hander has struggled recently but is having a promising season, reporting a 3.67 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP accompanied by a 9-5 record in 100.2 innings pitched. Thompson has tossed 2.2 scoreless innings against the Brewers this season and has yet to allow a run in six innings against the rivals.

The Cubs have been tough to beat at home recently where they are 6-2 in their last eight games. They went 5-2 on a seven-game road trip after winning two of three against the Reds and Nationals. The Cubs have won five out of their last seven games.

Willson Contreras has been a tough out against the Brewers pitching this season, recording a strong .313 average with four RBIs and a .967 OPS. The veteran catcher is having a decent season, bashing 19 homers with 48 RBIs and an .830 OPS. Contreras has four homers and ten RBIs this month.

The Cubs are posting 4.17 runs on the season, landing them 21st. The pitching staff enters with a 4.23 team ERA, positioning them 23rd in the Major Leagues.

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Brewers haven’t looked great recently. They have now dropped four out of their six series including series defeats to the Pirates and Reds. The Cubs have been strong at home where they have won six out of their last eight clashes. The Cubs have gotten the better of the Brew Crew, leading the season series 7-6.

Furthermore, Brewers’ starter Aaron Ashby has been poor on the road. While some of it has been bad luck, the numbers are weak. He is 1-7 with a 4.55 ERA on the road. Keegan Thompson has tossed six shutout innings in his lone career action against the Brewers and is 6-2 with a 2.40 ERA at Wrigley Field this season.

Prediction: Chicago Cubs +125

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

I expect plenty of runs. Ashby has not fared well against the Cubs, squandering nine runs in 13.1 career innings. The Cubs are in a groove at the plate, scoring 29 runs in their last six games.

In addition, the Brewers should contribute to this total. They have averaged a solid 4.45 runs against their rivals this season. Thompson hasn't been at his best recently, conceding 10 runs in his last three starts. The over is also 3-0-1 in the Brewers' last four games overall. The over has been the common trend when these rivals meet. It is 6-2-2 in the last eight games at Wrigley Field.
