A pair of AL West rivals continue a weekend series on the diamond out on the west coast looking to put one in the win column. The Seattle Mariners are on the road as they play the middle game of a three-game series with the Oakland A’s Saturday night. Seattle swept the Angels at home in their most recent series, winning 11-7 on Wednesday in their previous game. Oakland split a four-game series with Texas on the road, losing the finale of the set 10-3 Thursday afternoon. This article was published prior to the conclusion of the opening game of the series at the RingCentral Coliseum Friday night.

Seattle Mariners Looking to Stay In Playoff Hunt

Seattle won their third straight and their sixth game in the last eight contests as they swept the Angels at home with Wednesday’s victory. The Mariners entered Saturday second in the AL West, 10.5 games behind the Astros for the top spot. In the AL Wild Card picture, the team owned the top Wild Card spot entering Saturday by one game over Toronto: they were 2.5 games ahead of the Twins to remain on the right side of the playoff cut line. On Wednesday, Seattle got two hits from Cal Raleigh (two runs, three RBI), Adam Frazier (two runs) and Mitch Haniger (two runs, RBI) in the victory. Raleigh (his 17th and 18th) homered twice while Jesse Winker (his 13th) and Eugenio Suarez (his 20th) each went deep in the win. George Kirby (5-3) earned the win as he allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

Logan Gilbert is on the hill for the Mariners in the opener as he makes his 26th start of the season in this contest. He is 10-5 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.243 WHIP, 41 walks and 127 strikeouts over 138.1 innings of work this year. Gilbert didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Rangers Sunday on the road. He threw six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts in a game the Mariners eventually dropped 5-3. In his last three starts, Gilbert is 0-1 with a 9.39 ERA, a 2.02 WHIP, nine walks and nine strikeouts over 15.1 innings of work. Gilbert makes his sixth career start against the A’s in this contest. He comes in 1-0 with a 4.44 ERA, a 1.233 WHIP, five walks and 21 strikeouts over 24.1 innings of work against them. In his lone start at the RingCentral Coliseum, which came on May 25, 2021, he didn’t factor in the decision. Gilbert allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts over four innings in a game the Mariners went on to win 4-3.

Oakland A’s Trying to Play a Spoiler Role

Oakland split a four-game road set with Texas as they were beaten soundly in the finale of the series Thursday afternoon. The A’s entered Saturday last in the AL West, 33.5 games behind the Astros for the division lead. They were a distant 21 games behind the Blue Jays for the final wild-card spot in the American League. On Thursday, Oakland got two hits from Vimael Machin while Sheldon Neuse hit his fourth homer of the season in a losing effort. Zach Logue (3-7) took the loss on the mound as he allowed seven runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work before departing.

James Kaprielian is on the hill for his 20th start of the season for the A’s in this contest. He comes in 3-7 with a 4.33 ERA, a 1.328 WHIP, 41 walks and 68 strikeouts over 95.2 innings of work on the year. Kaprielian took the tough loss in his last start, which came Monday on the road against the Rangers. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a game the A’s dropped 2-1. In his last three starts, Kaprielian is 1-2 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, six walks and 15 strikeouts over 15.2 innings of work. Kaprielian makes his ninth career appearance and sixth start against the Mariners in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, 11 walks and 29 strikeouts over 33.1 innings of work in those outings. Kaprielian is 5-7 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, 38 walks and 94 strikeouts over 97.2 innings in 20 career appearances, 18 starts, at the RingCentral Coliseum.

Insiders Status:

The A’s are going nowhere fast this season and the youth movement is in full swing with the promotion of Shea Langeliers to take over an everyday spot in the lineup. Kaprielian has pitched pretty well in his recent outings, though it hasn’t necessarily paid dividends in the win column. Gilbert has been roughed up a bit of late though it’s important to note that two of those starts were against the Yankees when New York was hitting. Facing an Oakland team that has had major issues when it comes to putting runs on the board, especially at home, should work in the Mariners’ favor here. Give the advantage to Seattle in this contest as they get the win.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners -1.5 (+100)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Seattle entered Saturday having seen the under post a 56-58-6 mark in their first 117 games. The Mariners entered Friday’s game 23rd in the majors with 4.18 runs per contest and that climbs slightly to 4.37 runs per game away from T-Mobile Park, which is 18th in the majors. Seattle has an average total of 8.03 runs per contest and that number climbs to 8.45 runs per contest on the road. Oakland has seen the under post a 64-49-8 record on the season going into Saturday. The A’s are 29th in runs per game with 3.38 per contest. That number craters to 2.82 runs per game at home, which is the worst mark in the majors. Oakland’s average total this season is 7.91 runs per game and that drops down to 7.51 runs per contest at home. Even with the A’s issues scoring, this total is too low. Look for the Mariners to put up enough runs that a typical Oakland output pushes this over the number.

Prediction: Over 7
