MLB: Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 4:05pm EST
Line: Los Angeles -160/Pittsburgh +144
The Pittsburgh Pirates will host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the four game series finale Thursday afternoon from PNC Park. The Dodgers will give the call to 30-year old left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, and the Pirates will counter with 24-year old right-hander Chad Kuhl. The Dodgers have won all six games against the Pirates this season.
Ryu Silences Tigers in Another Strong Performance
Hyun-Jin Ryu will get the nod for the 20th time of the season, aiming for win number five. Ryu was sharp in his latest outing, tossing five shutout innings against the Tigers and finished with the no decision in a game the Dodgers lost. The 6-foot-2 left-hander has been tremendous as of late, and now features a 3.45 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP accompanied with a 4-6 record in 101.2 innings of work. He recorded the win each of his three career starts against the Pirates to go with a solid 2.79 ERA. Andrew McCutchen is 2 for 9 with one homer against Ryu, while Josh Harrison is 2 for 7, and Starling Marte is 2 for 9. Chris Taylor continues to come through at the plate, collecting eight hits along with five RBI’s over his last four games. The 26-year old left fielder is having a solid season, currently hitting .310 with 17 home runs and 61 RBI’s. Taylor has notched a hit in 7 of 23 at bats with seven RBI’s against the Pirates this season.
The Dodgers are currently averaging 5.12 runs per game, placing them fifth in the Majors, and feature a .256 team batting average. The Los Angeles pitching continues to dominate, now featuring a Major League best 3.14 team ERA.
Kuhl Targets Fourth Win in Last Five Starts
Chad Kuhl will get the nod for the 26th time of the season, targeting his fourth win of the month. Kuhl was terrific in his previous performance, limiting the Cardinals to one run in five innings and recorded the win to bring his record to 6-8. The young right-hander is having a strong second half and is carrying a 4.52 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 125.1 innings pitched. He faced the Dodgers earlier this season and conceded four runs in five innings and took the loss, and has now allowed nine runs with a 2-1 record in 16 career innings against L.A. Corey Seager is 2 for 8 against Kuhl, while Yasiel Puig is 1 for 4, and Justin Turner is 2 for 4 with three RBI’s. Andrew McCutchen has been very quiet this month after a very strong month of July, driving in only seven runs with one homer this month. The 30-year old centerfielder is having a solid season, currently hitting .287 with 23 home runs and 73 RBI’s. McCutchen is 4 for 20 against the Dodgers this season.
The Pirates are currently averaging 4.29 runs per game, ranking them 25th in the Majors, and are hitting .247 as a team. The Pittsburgh pitching has been solid, posting a 4.33 team ERA, placing them 13th in the Majors.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are:
- 5-0 in Ryu’s last starts.
- 5-0 in their last 5 games against the Pirates heading into Wednesday’s action.
- 54-10 in their last 64 games overall.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are:
- 4-12 in Kuhl’s last 16 starts against a team with a winning record.
- 0-6 in Kuhl’s last 6 starts against the NL West.
- 2-8 in their last 10 games overall.
- 13-28 in their last 42 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600.
I am taking the Dodgers, and I recommend taking them on the run line in this matchup. Ryu has been nearly flawless as of late, allowing a total of only five runs over his last five starts, and he has limited the Pirates to six runs in 19.1 innings with a 3-0 record in three career starts. Furthermore, Kuhl owns a weak 4.88 ERA at PNC Park this season and the Dodgers did score four runs in five innings against him earlier this season. In addition, 10 of the Dodgers 11 wins with Ryu on the mound have come by at least two runs, so I am confident taking them on the run line.
