The National League West meets the National League Central this evening as the San Diego Padres grapple with the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St Louis, Missouri in game three of their three-game series. The Cards have won 44 of their last 59 home games in this series. Pitching Probables: Luis Perdomo (6-8, 4.93 ERA) will take to the mound in this one and he will battle it out with Carlos Martinez (10-9, 3.57 ERA).
Padres Rip Poor Cardinals’ Pitching
The San Diego Padres have been the worst offensive team in the league this year, but that offense didn’t look it as they pounded out 11 hits and scored 12 runs in the 12-4 win. Yangervis Solarte had a strong game as he had three hits, including a homer, while driving in six runs. It was his 14th homer of the year. It was just the 3rd all year that they scored more than 10 runs in a game. The other two times were both on the road and both against the Giants and both times they also scored 12 runs in the game. They really took advantage of a struggling St Louis pitching staff and they just had scored a total of nine runs in their previous five games. The Padres have a lot of work to do in the offseason if they hope to contend for a playoff spot and it really has to start with their offense, which has continually been one of the worst in the league. Despite the win, they are still just 23-39 on the road for the year. Toeing the slab for the Padres in this one will be Luis Perdomo and he has gone 6-8 with a 4.93 ERA in 22 starts on the year, including 1-2 with a 5.00 ERA in his last three starts and 2-5 with a 4.72 ERA in 10 starts on the road. Perdomo is 14-17 with a 4.89 ERA in 42 career starts overall, including 3-6 with a 4.24 ERA in nine career starts in August. This will be his first career start against the Cardinals.
The Padres have not been a good offensive team so far as they come in ranked 30th in the league in scoring, putting up 3.86 rpg, while also ranking 30th in hitting at .234 and 16th in homers with 154. On the mound, they have been poor so far as they come in ranked 20th in the league in ERA at 4.62, while also ranking 13th in WHIP at 1.35.
Cards Need Their Pitching To Return Or No Playoffs
The St Louis Cardinals are really struggling to stay in the race for a division title and a wild card berth, but it has not been easy for them of late as their pitching has completely left them. The Cardinals are still in the top 10 in pitching this year, but they have really been torched on the mound as they have allowed 7.2 rpg in their last 10 games and have gone just 4-6 in those games. You have to know that their pitching is struggling after they allowed the worst offense in the league to hang 12 runs on them in game one of this series. If their pitching doesn’t return, then they will have a very tough time getting into the postseason. As of Tuesday night, the Cardinals are 4.5 games out of first in the National League Central and 5.0 games out of a wildcard slot. St Louis is 35-28 here at home for the year. The Cardinals will send out Carlos Martinez in this one and he has gone 10-9 with a 3.57 ERA in 25 starts on the year, including 3-0 with a 3.43 ERA in his last three starts and 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 12 starts here at home. Martinez has gone 8-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 21 games (15 starts) in his career in August and he is 21-16 with a 3.68 ERA in 84 games (48 starts) here at Busch Stadium, while against the Padres he has gone 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in six games (three starts).
The Cardinals have been a below average offensive team so far as they come in ranked 16th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.73 rpg, while also ranking 8th in hitting at .261 and 20th in homers with 150. On the mound, they have been solid as they come in ranked 7th in the league in ERA at 4.03, while also ranking 11th in WHIP at 1.31.
San Diego is:
- The Over is 12-1 in their last 13 road games vs. a right-handed starter
- The Over is 7-3 in their last 10 during game three of a series
St Louis is:
- The Over is 11-1 in their last 12 games vs. a right-handed starter
- The Over is 21-5-2 in their last 28 during game three of a series
The St Louis Cardinals are in desperation mode right now as their pitching has really let them down late, which has caused them to slide some in the race for a wildcard spot and a division title. The reason for their troubles has been their pitching, which has completely left them as they have a 7.06 ERA over their last 10 games. Carlos Martinez has been solid for St Louis and he has good numbers against the Padres in his career, but still, San Diego is a better offense on the road and behind Martinez is a pen that has a 6.75 ERA over its last 10 games. The Padres will send out Luis Perdomo and he has a 4.72 ERA on the road and a 5.00 ERA in his last three starts and will be facing a St Louis offense that has averaged a solid 5.80 rpg in their last 10 games. The Padres have allowed 5.60 rpg on the road this year. The Over is 13-3 in the Cardinals’ last 16 games overall and 14-3-1 in San Diego’s last 18 road games. Take the Over in this one.
