Seattle Mariners (65-63; 62-61-5 O/U) vs. New York Yankees (68-57; 64-58-3 O/U)
MLB: Friday, August 25, 2017 at 7:05pm EST
Line: New York -148/Seattle +148
The New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners will kick off a three game series Friday evening from Yankee Stadium. The Mariners will give the call to 28-year old left-hander Ariel Miranda, and 37-year old left-hander CC Sabathia will take the mound for the Yankees. The Yankees won three of four over the Mariners last month.
Miranda Finally Back in Win Column in Victory Over Rays
Ariel Miranda will get the nod for the 26th time of the season, aiming for win number nine. Miranda allowed three runs in five innings to the Rays in his previous start and collecting the win. The 6-foot-2 left-hander is having a rocky second half, and now owns a 4.78 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP to go with an 8-6 record in 141.1 innings of work. He faced the Yankees for the first time of his young career last month and limited them to two runs in 5.1 innings, and finished with the no decision in a game the Mariners won. Nelson Cruz is one of the hottest hitters in the Majors as he has recorded an RBI in all but seven games this August, and has driven in a total of 21 runs this month. The veteran DH is showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 37, currently hitting .291 with 31 home runs and 100 RBI’s. Cruz is 5 for 16 with one RBI against the Yankees this season.
The Mariners are scoring an average of 4.70 runs per game, ranking them 17th in the Major Leagues, and are hitting .261 as a team. The Seattle pitching has been average, posting a 4.47 team ERA, placing them 15th in the Majors.
Sabathia Targets Second Win Vs Mariners this Season
CC Sabathia will get the nod for the 21st time of the season, targeting his second straight win. Sabathia was solid in his previous performance, limiting the Red Sox to only two runs over six innings and recorded the victory. The veteran southpaw has not been quite as effective in the second half, and is now carrying a 3.99 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP to go with a 10-5 record in 108.1 innings pitched. He took on the Mariners last month and held them to one run in five innings, and now features a 14-6 record and a stifling 2.62 ERA in 27 career starts against Seattle. Nelson Cruz is 6 for 26 against Sabathia, while Kyle Seager is 3 for 20, and Robinson Cano is 4 for 19 with two RBI’s. Gary Sanchez is on a tear at the plate, smashing eight home runs along with a whopping 19 RBI’s over his last 11 games. The 24-year old catcher is having a terrific first full season in the Majors, currently hitting .276 with 26 home runs and 72 RBI’s. Sanchez is 2 for 16 against the Mariners this season.
The power-hitting Yankees are currently averaging 5.22 runs per game, good for third in the Major Leagues, and feature a .261 team batting average. The New York pitching is sporting a terrific 3.84 team ERA, ranking them fifth in the Majors.
The Seattle Mariners are:
- 1-5 in their last 6 games against the Yankees.
- 9-20 in their last 29 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600
The New York Yankees are:
- 7-2 in their last 9 games overall.
- 49-20 in their last 69 home games after a road trip of seven or more days.
- 7-3 in their last 10 games in the first game of a series.
I am siding with the Yankees in this one. Miranda has been shaky as of late, posting an abysmal 7.02 ERA over his last eight starts, and he owns a poor 6.19 ERA on the road, so I expect the Yankees to have a strong night at the plate. In addition, Sabathia limited the Mariners to one in five innings in the latest meeting, and he possesses a strong 2.62 career ERA against Seattle, so he should be able to limit the damage.
Pick: New York Yankees -148
Sabathia is struggling at Yankee Stadium this season and Miranda has not been sharp as of late. The Mariners should do damage against Sabathia who owns a poor 5.68 ERA at home this season, and the over is 6-1-1 in the Yankees last 8 games following a road trip of seven or more days. Miranda has conceded seven homers over his last four starts, and the over is 4-1 in his last five road starts.
