Colorado Rockies (69-58; 52-69-6 O/U) vs. Atlanta Braves (56-69; 65-56-4 O/U)
MLB: Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 7:10pm EST
Line: Atlanta -121/Colorado +110
The Atlanta Braves will square off with the Colorado Rockies in the second game of a three game set Saturday night from SunTrust Park. The Rockies will give the nod to 24-year old left-hander Kyle Freeland, and the Braves will counter with 24-year old left-hander Sean Newcomb. The season series is tied two games apiece.
Freeland Eyes First Win of August
Kyle Freeland will take the mound for the 25th time of the campaign, hunting for his first win of August. Freeland conceded three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings to the Brewers last time out, and was charged with the loss. The rookie left-hander is having a fantastic season, sporting a 3.71 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP to go with an 11-8 record in 133.1 innings pitched. He just battled the Braves on August 15th and was solid, allowing three runs in six innings and finished with the no decision in a game the Rockies lost. Nolan Arenado is heating up again, belting three homers along with eight RBI’s over his last nine games. The 26-year old third baseman is having a phenomenal season, currently hitting .313 with 29 home runs and a Major League leading 108 RBI’s. Arenado is 4 for 12 with three RBI’s against the Braves this season.
The Rockies potent lineup is averaging 5.17 runs per game, ranking them fourth in the Majors, and are hitting .274 as a team. The Colorado pitching is carrying a solid 4.63 team ERA, positioning them 21st in the Major Leagues.
Newcomb Silences Reds in Second Win of Season
Sean Newcomb will make his 14th start of the year, targeting his second straight win. Newcomb was outstanding in his previous performance, tossing five shutout innings against the Reds, and earned the win to bring his record to 2-7. The rookie left-hander is having control troubles however overall he is off to a promising start to his Major League career, posting a 4.13 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP in 69.2 innings logged. He took on the Rockies earlier this month and was solid, allowing three runs in six innings and finished with the no decision in a game the Braves won. Ender Inciarte is having a solid month, sporting a .341 average in August and he has driven in four runs over his last seven games. The 26-year old leadoff hitter is having a fantastic season, now featuring a .303 average with 10 homers and 44 RBI’s. Inciarte is 4 for 11 with two RBI’s against the Rockies this season.
The Braves are now scoring an average of 4.59 runs per game, ranking them 20th overall, and own a .262 team batting average. The Atlanta pitching is carrying a weak 4.79 team ERA, positioning them 25th in the Major Leagues.
The Colorado Rockies are:
- 16-5 in their last 21 games against the Braves overall.
- 14-6 in their last 20 games against a starter with a WHIP above 1.30.
The Atlanta Braves are:
- 1-4 in Newcomb’s last 5 home starts.
- 1-5 in Newcomb’s last 6 starts against a team with a winning record.
- 1-7 in their last 8 home games against a team with a losing road record.
I am siding with the Rockies in this matchup. Freeland held the Braves to three runs in six innings earlier this month, and overall he has been better than Newcomb. Furthermore, Newcomb walks too many hitters for my liking, issuing 17 walks over his last four starts, and the Rockies are a team that will make you play for free passes.
Pick: Colorado Rockies +110
Both Kyle Freeland and Sean Newcomb have been very steady on the mound as of late. Freeland has not allowed more than three runs in a start since early July, and the under is 9-1-2 in Freeland’s last 11 starts against a team with a losing record. Newcomb has also not conceded more than three runs in six straight starts, plus the under is 4-1 in his last five starts overall.
