The St. Louis Cardinals are hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in this interleague showdown. The Cards are 4 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs, and they’re 4.5 games back in the National League Wild Card race. Meanwhile, the Rays are 3.5 games behind in the American League Wild Card race. Which one of these clubs will get an important win on Sunday afternoon?
Rays beat up the Cards in game one
The Tampa Bay Rays picked up an impressive win in game one of the series, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3. It was their fourth win in their last five games. The Rays had a terrific night at the plate, finishing the game with 16 hits. Tampa Bay’s lineup has had a pretty mediocre season. They’ve only scored 559 runs, which is the eighth-fewest in Major League Baseball. However, Tampa’s lineup has done enough to help them win four of their last five games.
Chris Archer has had a pretty nice season in 2017. The right-handed ace looked terrific in his most recent outing, a win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Archer allowed just 4 hits, a walk, and one earned run in six innings of action. He also had 10 strikeouts in the victory. It was the second consecutive game in which he fanned 10 batters. Archer will attempt to keep it going with another nice performance on Sunday at Busch Stadium.
Cardinals grounded by Tampa Bay
The St. Louis Cardinals lost their second consecutive game and their fifth game in their last six tries on Friday night. They were lit up by the Rays in Friday night’s 7-3 loss. The Cards only had five hits in game one of this series. They’ve had a pretty nice season at the plate. The Cardinals are hitting .262 this year, which is the eighth best batting average in the majors.
Lance Lynn has already racked up 10 wins this season, and the Cards are hoping that he can help them sneak into the playoffs. Lynn didn’t look great in his last start. He gave up 6 hits, a walk, and 4 runs in a no-decision against the San Diego Padres. The right-handed veteran only has one win this month. He’ll look for his second as he takes on Tampa’s lineup in this one.
The Tampa Bay Rays are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 games on grass.
- 6-2 in their last 8 interleague road games vs. a team with a winning record.
The St. Louis Cardinals are:
- 2-5 in their last 7 when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous game.
- 1-4 in their last 5 overall.
- 0-4 in their last 4 vs. American League East.
- 1-4 in Wacha’s last 5 starts during game 1 of a series.
- 0-5 in Wacha’s last 5 starts vs. American League East.
Chris Archer has been great in day games. He’s 3-1 with a 3.36 ERA in his 10 starts in the afternoon this season. Furthermore, Archer has averaged nearly 9 strikeouts a game in his last 7 starts. The Cardinals have been pretty streaky recently, and they’ve currently lost 8 of their last 11 games. I think the Rays will beat the Cardinals in St. Louis behind a terrific performance from Chris Archer.
