Starting Pitchers: Matthew Boyd (L) 5-5, 5.30 ERA, 1.62 WHIP (DET) v. Chris Tillman (R) 1-6, 7.65 ERA, 1.98 WHIP (BAL)
Money Line: Detroit Tigers +116 | Baltimore Orioles -126
The Baltimore Orioles are hosting the Detroit Tigers in this American League matchup. Neither of these clubs has had much success this season. The Tigers are near the bottom of the AL Central. They’re 8.5 games behind the division-leading Cleveland Indians. The Orioles are also trailing in their division. They’re 5.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. Which one of these clubs will improve their record with a win on Thursday night in Baltimore?
Tigers blank the Yanks
The Detroit Tigers won their second consecutive game on Wednesday night, beating the Yankees in New York 2-0. Detroit’s lineup wasn’t great, but they did enough to win. The Tigers finished the game with fewer hits than the Yankees. Offensive production hasn’t been a problem for the Tigers for much of the season. They’ve scored the 10th most runs (512) in either league this year.
Matthew Boyd will get the nod for the Tigers in this showdown with the Orioles. Boyd has had a decent season thus far. The young lefty has been winning games lately, and he picked up another victory in his most recent start against the Astros. Boyd only gave up 3 runs in 7 1/3 innings. He fanned 5 batters and didn’t allow a walk in the win. The Tigers are hoping that their promising young southpaw keeps on winning as he takes the hill on Thursday.
Orioles roll through the Royals
The Baltimore Orioles topped the Kansas City Royals 6-0 to extend their winning streak to five games. The Orioles had a terrific day at the plate. Baltimore’s lineup hasn’t been great this season, but Jonathon Schoop has had a great year. Schoop currently leads the Orioles in batting average (.308), home runs (24), and RBIs (78).
Chris Tillman will start this game on the mound. Tillman has had a horrendous season, and he really struggled in his most recent start against the Texas Rangers in Arlington. The veteran right-hander allowed 9 hits, 2 walks, and 8 runs in only 4 1/3 innings of action in a losing effort. Tillman hasn’t won a game in months. He’s hoping to end his drought in this matchup with the Tigers.
The Detroit Tigers are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 vs. American League East.
- 4-0 in Boyd’s last 4 starts.
- 5-2 in Boyd’s last 7 road starts.
The Baltimore Orioles are:
- 4-10 in their last 14 during game 1 of a series.
- 2-5 in Tillman’s last 7 home starts.
- 3-8 in Tillman’s last 11 starts.
- 2-8 in Tillman’s last 10 starts on grass.
- 1-5 in Tillman’s last 6 starts with 5 days of rest.
These two clubs have been playing well recently, but the Tigers will have the edge on the mound. Chris Tillman hasn’t won a game since his first start of the season. Meanwhile, Matthew Boyd has won his last three consecutive starts. The Detroit Tigers have won four of their last five games on the road. I like the Tigers to keep on winning and top the Orioles on Thursday night in Baltimore.
