The last-place Arizona Diamondbacks will host the first-place San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Before Monday night's contest, in which the Giants led 9-8 in the 10th inning but was not complete at the time of this preview, the Giants had won nine of the first 10 head-to-head matchups.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are scheduled to start former Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, on Tuesday, and the Giants will counter with Johnny Cueto. Bumgarner is 5-6 with a 4.87 ERA, and Cueto is 7-5 with a 3.84 ERA this season.

Giants hanging onto baseballs best record

After coming into the season with a 75.5 over/under win total according to DraftKings, the Giants have been the best surprise in baseball, entering Monday night with an MLB best 66-39 record overall, 31-22 on the road, and third behind the Dodgers and Astros with a +119 run differential.

Bumgarner to face former team

The Arizona Diamondbacks are dead-last in the National League West, with a Major League worst 33-7 record after losing to the Dodgers 8-3 on Saturday and 13-0 Sunday. At the time of this preview, the Diamondbacks were tied at 8-8 in the seventh-inning, Arizona is 23rd in MLB on the season, scoring 4.1 runs per game and 25th with a .233 batting average. Eduardo Escobar, who was Arizona's top offensive player, had 22 home runs and 65 RBI with them before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers on July 28.

The Diamondbacks are 29th in MLB with a 5.40 ERA, and opponents have a .273 batting average against their pitching staff which is the worst in MLB. Madison Bumgarner, who is playing his second season with Arizona, has not yet faced the Giants this season.

The Giants are the better team, but it's hard to have faith in Cueto, who has a 5.09 road ERA in seven starts this season. The Giants have also lost four of the last five starts made by Cueto, with each of those recent losses coming against a losing team.

Cueto has faced the Diamondbacks twice on the road this season. Cueto's first start resulted in a 5-4 Giants win on May 26, and on July 1, the Giants lost 5-3 in a game where Cueto allowed all five runs in five innings.

The Diamondbacks were much more overmatched on Monday and battled to send the game into extra innings. Bumgarner should be motivated to face his former team, and I will take the Diamondbacks to keep this game within a run at a reasonable price.

Prediction: Arizona Diamondbacks +1.5 (-115)

Rating:

Madison Bumgarner has a 5.35 home ERA, and the over has cashed in seven of his last eight home starts. The Giants will be sending Cueto to the mound, who struggled in both his starts against Arizona this season and has a 5.09 road ERA this season. I expect to see a high-scoring game on Tuesday.

Prediction: Over 9.5
