MLB: Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 7:10pm EST
Line: Cincinnati -145/San Diego +135
The Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres will continue a four game series Wednesday night from the Great American Ball Park. The Padres will send 30-year old left-hander Travis Wood to the mound, and the Reds will reply with 28-year old right-hander Asher Wojciechowski. The Padres lead the season series 3-1.
Wood Escapes with No Decision in Shaky Outing
Travis Wood will make his 31st appearance and third start as a member of the Padres, aiming for his third win. Wood conceded four runs in five innings to the Pirates in his previous start, and finished with the no decision. The veteran left-hander did notch a Quality Start in his first outing with the Padres, however he owns a poor 6.49 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP accompanied with a 2-3 record in 52.2 innings pitched on the season. He has pitched well in his career against the Reds, posting a stifling 2.91 ERA with a 4-5 record in 86.2 innings. Billy Hamilton is 3 for 18 against Wood, while Joey Votto is 6 for 23, and Adam Duvall is 1 for 5. Hunter Renfroe has been very quiet at the plate, driving in only one run since July 25th. Overall, the rookie right fielder is having a very promising season, currently hitting .235 with 20 home runs and 45 RBI’s in 102 games played. Renfroe is 1 for 15 with three RBI’s against the Reds this season.
The Padres are averaging a Major League worst 3.81 runs per game, and are only hitting .235 as a team. The San Diego pitching has been below average, recording a 4.68 team ERA, positioning them 22nd in the Major Leagues.
Wojciechowski Silences St. Louis in Best Start of Season
Asher Wojciechowski will make his 14th appearance and sixth start of the season, aiming for his second straight win. Wojciechowski was terrific in his previous start, limiting the Cardinals to only one run in five innings and recorded the win to bring his record to 2-1. The rookie right-hander pitched well in a relief role last month and is now back in the rotation as a result. He is carrying a 4.15 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 39 innings pitched on the season. Wojciechowski has shown great control, issuing only nine walks on the season. Zack Cozart is back in the lineup for the Reds after a brief stint on the DL. Cozart is having an outstanding season, as the career .254 hitter is sporting a .318 average with 13 home runs and 41 RBI’s. Cozart is 2 for 6 with two RBI’s against the Padres this season.
The Reds are now scoring an average of 4.56 runs per game, ranking them 18th in the Majors, and are hitting .253 as a team. The Cincinnati pitching continues to stumble, posting a Major League worst 5.22 team ERA.
The San Diego Padres are:
- under is 8-3 in their last 11 games against the NL Central.
- under is 6-2-1 in their last 9 games against the Reds.
The Cincinnati Reds are:
- under is 7-3 in their last 10 games against a left-handed starter.
- under is 4-1 in their last 5 Wednesday games.
- under is 7-2 in their last 9 home games against a team with a losing record.
I am going with the under in this matchup. Wojciechowski is pitching well as of late, allowing a total of only two runs in his last 17.2 innings pitched, so I am confident he can contain the Padres weak lineup. Furthermore, Wood features a terrific 2.91 career ERA against the Reds, and the Reds have not had much success against left-handers this season, so I believe the under is a strong play in this one.
