A pair of NL West rivals trying to snap out of a slump meet up in the City of Angels. The Colorado Rockies are on the road to play the last of a four game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday afternoon. Colorado won the first two games of the series as they took a 9-1 victory in the opener Thursday night: they followed that up with a 5-4 win in Friday’s contest. The pitching matchup for the third game of the series Saturday saw Chad Bettis pitch for the Rockies against Los Angeles’s Alex Wood. First pitch in the contest was scheduled for 9:10 pm ET.
Colorado Rockies Try to Strengthen Hold on Wild Card Slot
Colorado has won four of five after a stretch where they dropped five of six to try and get back on track. The Rockies entered Saturday with a three game edge over the Cardinals and Brewers for the second wild card slot. Colorado gave up four runs in the first but blanked the Dodgers the rest of the way: a four run fifth gave them an edge they wouldn’t relinquish. No player had more than one hit for the Rockies: Raimel Tapia drove in two runs while Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez each had a RBI. German Marquez recorded a no-decision after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Chris Rusin (5-0) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 38th save of the season.
Tyler Chatwood takes the mound for his 29th appearance and 22nd start of the season in this contest. He comes in 6-12 with one save, a 4.88 ERA, a 1.476 WHIP, a league high 70 walks and 103 strikeouts over 125.1 innings of work. Chatwood recorded a save in his last outing, which was a relief appearance against the Giants Tuesday at home. He threw three innings, allowing no runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in a 9-6 Colorado victory. Chatwood is 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA, a 2.31 WHIP, seven walks and five strikeouts over 8.2 innings in his last three starts. He makes his 14th start against the Dodgers in his career. Chatwood is 4-8 with a 4.27 ERA and a 1.577 WHIP over 71.2 innings of work. He has posted a 3-3 record with a 2.34 ERA and a 1.181 WHIP over 42.1 innings in seven career starts at Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles Dodgers Stumbling Down the Stretch
Los Angeles has been dismal over the last few weeks: their defeat Friday night marked their eighth straight and their 13th in the last 14 games. The Dodgers are still a lock for the postseason but they have to get things going again if they hope to make the postseason. Justin Turner (run, two RBI) and Austin Barnes (two RBI) each had two hits for Los Angeles in the game. The Dodgers jumped out for four runs in the first inning but was blanked over the final eight innings in the contest. Yu Darvish (8-12 overall, 2-3 with Los Angeles) took the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Rich Hill takes the hill to make his 22nd start of the season for the Dodgers in this contest. He is 9-7 with a 3.67 ERA, a 1.145 WHIP, 42 walks and 135 strikeouts over 112.2 innings of action this season. Hill took the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Diamondbacks Monday night. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in a game the Dodgers eventually lost, 13-0. He is 0-3 with a 4.34 ERA, a 0.70 WHIP, two walks and 23 strikeouts over 18.2 innings in his last three starts. He makes his fourth career start against the Rockies in this contest. Hill has a 0-2 record, an 8.80 ERA and a 1.891 WHIP over 15.1 innings of action. He is 7-5 with a 2.39 ERA and a 1.036 WHIP over 83.1 innings in 15 career starts at Dodger Stadium.
- Rockies are 1-5 in their last 6 Sunday games
- Dodgers are 10-1 in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a winning road record
This one is a tough one to try and follow: the Dodgers are as frigid as any team in the majors entering the weekend. Colorado has the worst record in the National League since June 21 though they had won four of five coming into Saturday. The Rockies are sending Chatwood back to the mound as a starter for the first time in over a month. Hill has dropped his last three starts but two of them were games the Dodgers had a chance in had they actually hit a little. Look for the Dodgers to come up with a tough win as they try to turn the corner here.
