Starting Pitchers: CC Sabathia (L) 11-5, 3.89 ERA, 1,29 WHIP (NYY) v. Jake Odorizzi (R) 8-7, 4.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP (TB)
Money Line: New York Yankees -125 | Tampa Bay Rays +115
The Tampa Bay Rays had to head up to New York to take on the Yankees due to Hurricane Irma. The Rays were scheduled to host this series, but it will be played at Citi Field. These two AL East clubs are both fighting for a spot in the playoffs as the season winds down. The Yankees have a 3.5 game lead as the leader in the Wild Card standings. Meanwhile, the Rays are 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the second spot in the AL Wild Card. Which one of these division rivals will get a win in New York on Monday night?
Yankees trounce the Rangers
The New York Yankees came up big on Sunday afternoon, topping the Texas Rangers in Arlington with a 16-7 victory. It was New York’s second consecutive win. The Yankees lineup was terrific in the blowout win. They finished the day with 18 hits. Aaron Judge went yard twice, and he became the second rookie to hit 40 home runs this season. Gary Sanchez also homered twice. The Yankees lineup will try to replicate their performance as they head across town to Citi Field in this matchup with the Rays.
CC Sabathia gets the nod for the Yankees on Monday. Sabathia has enjoyed a renaissance in 2017. However, the hefty lefty struggled in his last start against the Orioles in Baltimore. Sabathia gave up 8 hits, including 3 home runs, and he surrendered 5 runs in 5 1/3 innings of action. The ugly outed resulted in a no-decision. Sabathia will try to get back to winning as he takes on the Rays in this one.
Rays top the Red Sox
The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Sunday. The Rays prevented the Sox from sweeping them with the game three victory. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak. Tampa Bay’s lineup has really struggled recently, which has forced them to rely on their pitching. The Rays have a pitiful .245 batting average. That’s the fourth-worst batting average in either league this season.
The Rays are sending Jake Odorizzi out to the hill in Monday’s showdown with the Yankees. Odorizzi hasn’t been spectacular this season, but he’s a game above .500. The right-hander picked up his eighth win of the season in his last start against the Minnesota Twins. Odorizzi pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, and he only allowed one hit. He also fanned 6 batters in the win. Odorizzi will try to win his third consecutive game on Monday at Citi Field.
The New York Yankees are:
- 6-1 in their last 7 vs. a team with a losing record.
- 4-1 in their last 5 vs. American League East.
- 6-2 in their last 8 Monday games.
- 12-3 in Sabathia’s last 15 starts vs. American League East.
The Tampa Bay Rays are:
- 1-5 in their last 6 games vs. a left-handed starter.
- 0-4 in their last 4 games on grass.
- 2-6 in Odorizzi’s last 8 Monday starts.
- 1-5 in Odorizzi’s last 6 starts vs. American League East.
- 1-6 in Odorizzi’s last 7 home starts.
- 1-11 in Odorizzi’s last 12 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.
The Yankees have had a lot of success against the Rays this season. They’re 4-1 in their last five meetings with Tampa Bay. Additionally, Sabathia has dominated Tampa Bay’s lineup. The Yankees have won Sabathia’s last 8 starts against the Rays. Meanwhile, Jake Odorizzi really struggled against the Yankees in his only start against them in 2017. I like the New York Yankees to win this one behind a nice performance by Sabathia.
