It’s the final game of a series between a pair of AL East rivals north of the border. The Baltimore Orioles play the last game of their three game series against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night. Toronto won the opening game of the series as they took a 4-3 victory Monday night. The Blue Jays followed that up with a walk-off, 3-2, victory Tuesday night. Can Baltimore get back on track or will they end up getting swept by Toronto?

Baltimore Orioles Seek to Make Up Ground in Wild Card Race

Baltimore had their chances but couldn’t close things out as they lost their sixth straight game. The Orioles dropped four games behind the Twins for the second wild card spot in the American League depending on what Minnesota does Tuesday night. Tim Beckham (run, RBI) had two hits for Baltimore, including his 21st homer of the year, in the loss. Mark Trumbo drove in the other run for the Orioles. Dylan Bundy recorded a no-decision after throwing six innings: he allowed one run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Zach Britton (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.

Kevin Gausman logs his 31st start of the year for the Orioles in this contest. He is 10-10 with a 4.99 ERA, a 1.587 WHIP with 67 walks against 152 strikeouts over 160.2 innings of work. Gausman took the loss in his last start, which came at home against the Yankees Thursday. He threw three innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a 9-1 Baltimore loss. Gausman is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, seven walks and 17 strikeouts over 16.2 innings in his last three starts. He makes his 18th career appearance and 13th start against the Blue Jays in this contest. Gausman is 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.398 WHIP over 73.2 innings of work. He is 2-3 with a 4.24 ERA and a 1.463 WHIP over 10 appearances, seven starts, covering 40.1 innings at Rogers Centre in his career.

Toronto Blue Jays Go For Series Sweep

Toronto rallied to win in walk-off fashion to knock off the Orioles for the second straight game. The Blue Jays extended their win streak to four with the triumph. Toronto got three hits for Richard Urena (RBI) while Justin Smoak (RBI) and Luke Maile (run, RBI) each had two hits in the game. Joe Biagini recorded a no-decision in his start as he threw eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Tim Mayza (1-0) fanned the only batter he faced, throwing four pitches, to pick up the win in relief.

Marcus Stroman takes the mound for his 30th start of the season for the Blue Jays in this contest. He is 11-7 with a 3.18 ERA, a 1.301 WHIP, 52 walks and 148 strikeouts over 178.1 innings of action. Stroman took the loss in his last start, which came against the Tigers at home Friday night. He threw six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in a 5-4 Blue Jays loss. Stroman is 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, one walk and 13 strikeouts over 13.2 innings in his last three starts. He makes his 10th career appearance and ninth start against the Orioles here: he is 3-3 with one save, a 4.29 ERA and a 1.272 WHIP over 50.1 innings of work. Stroman is 18-10 with one save, a 3.26 ERA and a 1.142 WHIP in 48 appearances, 44 starts, totaling 301.1 innings at Rogers Centre in his career.

  • Orioles are 3-8 in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a losing record
  • Orioles are 7-20 in their last 27 road games

  • Blue Jays are 6-0 in their last 6 Wednesday games
  • Blue Jays are 5-1 in their last 6 during game 3 of a series

Baltimore had a chance to win Tuesday night but let it slip away and in the process, their chances at the postseason continue to dwindle. The Orioles have lost six straight games coming into the finale of this set and if Minnesota keeps winning, they’ll be out of the picture soon. Toronto, despite being out of the playoff picture for all intents and purposes, has strung together four straight wins. With Stroman on the hill, they make it five in a row as they sweep the set.

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -120

Toronto has the momentum despite being seven games out of the second wild card spot depending on what transpires with the Twins Tuesday night. Baltimore picked the worst time to slump after their torrid run in late July and August to get into the wild card picture. Pitching continues to plague the Orioles only it was the relief corps that let them down after Bundy turned in a quality start. Now they have to turn to Gausman in order to try and salvage the finale of the set. Time is running out for Baltimore to get on a run.

The under is 4-0 in the Orioles’ last 4 road games vs. a team with a losing record. Toronto has seen the under go 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400, 5-1 in their last six overall, 4-1 in their last five at home and 4-1 in their last five on astroturf. With the first two games of this series being lower scoring affairs, look for this to follow the same trend and fall under the total as well.

Under 8.5
