MLB: Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 9:40pm EST
Line: Arizona -155/Colorado +140
The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies will continue a big four game divisional series Wednesday night from Chase Field. The Rockies will give the nod to 22-year old right-hander German Marquez, and the Diamondbacks will counter with 28-year old left-hander Patrick Corbin. The Diamondbacks own a 9-7 lead in the season series.
Marquez Eyes First Win Vs Diamondbacks this Season
German Marquez will get the nod for the 26th time of the season, looking to improve his record to 11-7. Marquez allowed four runs (two earned) in four innings to the Dodgers in his previous performance and finished with the no decision. The rookie right-hander is having decent season, posting a 4.27 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 141.1 innings of work. He pitched well in three of his five starts against the Diamondbacks this season, allowing a total of 13 runs in 29.2 innings to go with an 0-2 record. Jake Lamb is 5 for 16 against Marquez, while Paul Goldschmidt is 4 for 8 with four RBI’s, and David Peralta is 2 for 10. Carlos Gonzalez has come alive at the plate, driving in seven runs along with two homers over his last nine games. The 31-year old right fielder has not been able to produce with any consistency this season and is currently hitting .252 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI’s. Gonzalez is 8 for 36 with four RBI’s against the Diamondbacks this season. The Rockies have a 3.5 game cushion over the Cardinals for the final Wildcard position.
The Rockies are scoring an average of 5.13 runs per game, good for fifth in the Majors, and are hitting .273 as a team. The Colorado pitching owns a 4.60 team ERA, placing them down at 18th in the Major Leagues.
Corbin Crushed by Padres in Worst Start of Season
Patrick Corbin is back on the mound for the 29th time of the season, looking to bounce back from his worst start of the year. Corbin surrendered eight runs in 4.1 innings to the Padres last time out and was tagged with the loss to drop his record to 13-12. Overall, the 6-foot-2 southpaw is having solid season, posting a 4.16 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 168.2 innings pitched. He pitched well in two of his three starts against the Rockies this season, and now owns a 6-3 record with a poor 5.02 ERA in 16 career starts against Colorado. Carlos Gonzalez is 5 for 19 with five RBI’s against Corbin, while DJ LeMahieu is 13 for 34 with five RBI’s, and Nolan Arenado is 6 for 33 with two RBI’s. Brandon Drury has been productive against the Rockies pitching this season, posting a .293 average with 10 RBI’s. The 25-year old second baseman is having a decent season, hitting .265 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI’s. Drury has recorded four RBI’s over his last seven games.
The Diamondbacks are averaging 4.97 runs per game, ranking them seventh in the Majors, and feature a .254 team batting average. The Arizona pitching continues to dominate, sporting a 3.61 team ERA, good for third in the Major Leagues.
The Colorado Rockies are:
- 5-0 in their last 5 games overall heading into Tuesday’s action.
- 4-1 in Marquez’ last 5 starts.
- 7-3 in their last 10 in the third game of a series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are:
- 1-4 in their last 5 home games.
- 6-13 in Corbin’s last 19 starts against the NL West.
I am siding with the Rockies in this matchup. Corbin owns a weak 5.02 career ERA against the Rockies, and the Rockies lineup is hitting a combined .295 against him, so I expect them to do some damage at the plate. Furthermore, Marquez owns a solid 3.90 ERA on the road this season, so I am confident backing him, plus the Rockies have heated up at the plate, scoring at least five runs in six out of their last seven games.
Pick: Colorado Rockies +140
The Rockies have given Corbin trouble in his career and Marquez has not been quite as effective as of late. The Rockies have scored 10 runs in 15 innings against Corbin this season and the over 5-1 in their last six games against the NL West. Marquez has only tallied two Quality Starts in his last six starts, and the over is 21-10-3 in the Diamondbacks last 34 home games against the Rockies.
