Dylan Covey Takes A Tough Loss
The Chicago White Sox have had a very tough season and they are just playing out the string and looking forward to the offseason. They did have a nice three-game winning streak, but that was ended with their 4-3 loss to the Royals on Tuesday night. Dylan Covey got the start in the game and he allowed four ERs on two hits and four walks in 5.2 innings of work. That part of the game was his fault, but he still had a chance to get a no-decision or a win, but the offense let him down. The White Sox scored three runs in the game, but they had 13 hits and left 10 runners on base. They just couldn’t get the one hit that would give them the lead. Covey has now gone 0-5 with a 7.90 ERA on the year. The White Sox have gone 23-47 on the road this year and they have averaged 4.21 rpg and have allowed 5.30 rpg in those games. Taking the hill for the White Sox in this one will be James Shields and he has gone 3-6 with a 5.40 ERA in 18 starts on the year, including 1-2 with a 4.42 ERA in his last three starts and 0-2 with a 5.53 ERA in eight starts on the road. Shields has gone 23-19 with a 3.90 ERA in 58 starts during Sept/ Oct and he is 48-41 with a 3.76 ERA in 135 career day starts, while against the Tigers he has gone 8-8 with a 4.37 ERA in 24 starts against, including 5-1 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 starts here at Comerica.
The White Sox have been a poor offensive team so far as they come in ranked 24th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.35 rpg, while also ranking 15th in hitting at .257 and 23rd in homers with 169. On the mound, they have been poor so far as they come in ranked 27th in the league in ERA at 4.83, while also ranking 26th in WHIP at 1.44.
Tigers Have No Offense In Cleveland
The Cleveland Indians are the hottest team in the league right now and while they have a very good offense, their pitching has been even better and the Tigers found that out the hard way. The Tigers lost the first two games of their series with the Tribe and were shutout in both games. They just haven’t had an answer for the Cleveland pitching, but they shouldn’t be too discouraged as Cleveland now has six shutouts during their 20 game win streak. The Tigers have now been shutout 12 times this year. Detroit lost game one 11-0 and game two 2-0. Getting the start in game two was Matthew Boyd and he had a good outing as he allowed just one ER on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Boyd is now 5-10 with a 5.75 ERA on the year. The Tigers have gone 32-38 at home for the year and have averaged 5.21 rpg and have allowed 5.34 rpg in those games. The Tigers will trot out Chad Bell in this one and he has gone 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 21 starts on the year, including 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA in two starts. This is his first year in the league. He has faced the White Sox once out of the pen this year and allowed three ERs on two hits in 2.1 innings of work in that outing. Bell was gone 2-4 with a 3.41 ERA in seven starts at Toledo (AAA) this year.
The Tigers have been a good offensive team so far as they come in ranked 19th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.62 rpg, while also ranking 12th in hitting at .260 and 24th in homers with 168. On the mound, they have been poor so far this year as they come in ranked 29th in the league in ERA at 5.25, while also ranking 30th in WHIP at 1.48.
- None Available
- 8-22 in their last 30 vs. the American League Central
- 0-8 in their last eight home games vs. a right-handed starter
The Detroit Tigers come in off a tough series against the hottest team in baseball and were shutout in the first two games of that series, while the White Sox have taken three of their last four after falling 4-3 to the Royals on Tuesday night. The White Sox have been playing a bit better of late and they actually have an edge on the mound in this one with Shields over Bell. James Shields has struggled this year, but he has great numbers in this park as he is 5-1 with a 3.01 ERA in 10 career starts here at Comerica Park. Chad Bell is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in two starts on the year and he was hit hard in his lone appearance out of the pen against the Sox. I look for the White Sox to take in this one even though they have struggled at this venue over the years.
