St Louis Cardinals (77-71 SU, 72-76 RL, 74-66-8 O/U) vs Chicago Cubs (82-66 SU, 64-84 RL, 71-70-7 O/U)

When: 2:20 PM EDT, Sunday, September 17, 2017

Where: Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois

Lines: Chicago -160/ St Louis +150

Total: NA

Sunday afternoon baseball and a pair of heated rivals from the National League Central will square off as the St Louis Cardinals rumble with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois in game three of their three-game series. Pitching Probables: Lance Lynn (11-7, 3.01 ERA) will toe the slab for the Cardinals and the Cubs will counter with Jose Quintana {10-11, 4.25 ERA).

Cards Are Sliding Some

The St Louis Cardinals have been in the mix for a postseason berth all year and they had been playing really well of late, but they have lost the first two games in this trip to Chicago and have now lost three of their last four overall. The Cards are now 4.0 games out of a wildcard slot and 5.0 games out of first in the race for the National League Central title. They have just 14 games left in the season to make up the needed ground, so they are running out of time. The offense has been hot of late, but they were able to score just one run on six hits in their 4-1 loss at Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The pitching has been strong of late as they have allowed just 3.2 rpg over their last 10 games. The Cards have gone 35-39 on the road and have averaged 4.96 rpg and have allowed 4.58 rpg in those games. Taking the hill for the Cardinals in this one will be Lance Lynn and he has gone 11-7 with a 3.01 ERA in 30 starts on the year, including 1-1 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts and 5-4 with a 2.99 ERA in 16 starts on the road. Lynn has gone 10-9 with a 2.74 ERA in 28 games (24 starts) during Sept/ Oct and 21-18 with a 4.18 ERA in 55 games (48 starts) in the daytime, while against the Cubs he is 6-6 with a 4.07 ERA in 17 games (16 starts), including 2-3 with a 4.60 ERA in eight starts here at Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals have been a solid offensive team so far as they come in ranked 12th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.75 rpg, while also ranking 15th in hitting at .259 and 19th in homers with 177. On the mound they have been solid as they come in ranked 6th in the league in ERA at 3.88, while also ranking 8th in WHIP at 1.28.

Hendricks Shuts Down The St Louis Offense

The Chicago Cubs are starting to play really well and this is the right time of year for them to be doing that. They come in off a 4-1 win over the Cardinals and they have now won their last five games in a row. They now have a 3.5 game lead over the Brewers and a 5.0 game lead over the Cardinals in the Central Division. The Cubs have outscored their opponents 51-17 over their five-game win streak. They have that look in their eyes, especially on offense. Kyle Hendricks has been steady for the Cubs this year and he had a very good outing on Saturday as he allowed just one ER on six hits in 7.2 innings of work to pick up the win. He now has gone 7-5 with a 3.22 ERA on the year. The Cubs have gone 45-32 here at home and they have averaged 5.43 rpg and have allowed 4.71 rpg in those games. Jose Quintana gets the nod for the Cubs in this one and he has gone 10-11 with a 4.25 ERA in 29 starts on the year, including 6-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 11 starts as a member of the Cubs and 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts. Quintana has gone 10-10 with a 3.43 ERA in 29 games (28 starts) in Sept/ Oct and 17-26 with a 3.90 ERA in 72 games (69 starts) in the daytime, plus he is 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA in eight starts in his career here at Wrigley Field, while against the Cards he is 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA in three starts.

The Cubs have been a good offensive team so far as they come in ranked 5th in the league in scoring, putting up 5.11 rpg, while also ranking 16th in hitting at .255 and 8th in homers with 206. On the mound they have been solid so far as they come in ranked 10th in the league in ERA at 4.10, while also ranking 10th in WHIP at 1.29.

Trends

St Louis is:

  • 1-4 in their last five road games vs. a team with a winning record
  • 1-5 in Lynn’s last six starts on grass

Chicago is:

  • 5-1 in Quintana’s last six starts on grass
  • 5-0 in their last five home games vs. a team with a losing road record

The St Louis Cardinals have lost three of their last four games, but they are still 9-4 in their last 13 games and need this game badly if they hope to stay in the race for a postseason berth. The problem here is that the Cubs have that look in their eyes and have won their last five games in a row, outscoring their foes 51-17 over that stretch. Lynn has pitched well of late, but he is just 2-3 with a 4.60 ERA in his career here at Wrigley Field. Jose Quintana has pitched well of late as he is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts and he is 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA in his career in this park. He is also 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA in three career starts against the Cards. I look for the Cubs to take this one, especially since the Cards are just 1-9 in their last 10 games here in Chicago.

Pick: Chicago -160
