The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels continue their three-game series on Saturday in Anaheim. The Mariners remain very much alive for their first playoff appearance since 2000 as they sit in the second wildcard position with just over two weeks left in the season. The Angels are in 4th place and well out of the race as they prepare for an important offseason. The pitching matchup for Saturday will be a pair of hard-throwing right-handers as the Mariners George Kirby (7-3, 2.18) takes on the Angels Shohei Ohtani (12-8, 2.55). First pitch is scheduled for 9:07pm EST.

Long Wait Almost Over

The Seattle Mariners come into this series with the Angels winners of three of their last four games. With each win, the Mariners get closer and closer to their first playoff appearance since 2000. Seattle sits in the second spot in the AL Wildcard race, just a half game behind the Blue Jays for the top spot. On Friday night, in the series opener with the Angels, the Mariners fell 8-7 in a shootout with the Angels. The Mariners still remain in second place in the wildcard standings.

The Mariners long postseason wait is nearly over and they will likely spend the final two weeks of the season sorting out their seeding in the AL Playoff picture. All three wildcard teams in the American League have a comfortable cushion over the Orioles as the only team left with a realistic shot. The Mariners will have to play in the first round of the playoffs but the earlier the team clinches, the sooner they can begin to set up their rotation for the playoffs. One pitcher who will be prominent in their postseason rotation is Saturday night's starter, George Kirby. Kirby has had an excellent season and has been particularly effective down the stretch. In his last five games, Kirby is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Kirby is 2-1 in three starts against the Angels this season with a 3.06 ERA.

Calm Before the Offseason Storm

The Angels final 16 games this season will be far easier to navigate than the team's offseason that is upcoming. The Angels will have to make some major decisions about the future of a team that can't seem to put together the right grouping of players around its two superstars: Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Both superstars are again having outstanding seasons and yet the Angels remain in the bottom tier of American League teams, over 20 games under .500. On Friday night against Seattle, Trout homered for the 8th time in 9 games and the Angels hung on for an 8-7 win.

The Angels have had some excitement in recent weeks despite the team's poor standing. Mike Trout hit a home run in seven straight games, coming one game short of the major league record shared by Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. Despite Trout's heroics, the Angels are still 3-7 in their last ten games. Saturday's starter will be two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani, the defending AL MVP, is once again in the MVP discussion due to his outstanding work at the plate and his dominance on the mound. In his last five starts, Ohtani is 2-1 with a 2.10 ERA and is striking out 9.3 per nine innings. Ohtani is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts.

Best Bets for this Game

Insiders Status:

This is a great matchup of two red-hot pitchers that specialize in the strikeout. The Mariners are playing better with a 6-4 record in their last ten games while the Angels come into this series winning just three of their last ten games. The Mariners get the edge in this game due to Ohtani's propensity to last only to the sixth inning in the majority of his recent starts. Ohtani's stuff has been lights out but he has been gone by the 7th inning consistently as of late. Kirby has done a better job of getting the Mariners deeper into games and should get the Mariners into the back end of their bullpen by the time he departs the game. The battle of bullpens swings the advantage heavily in the Mariners favor. The Mariners have won their last four games against the Angels heading into the series.

Take the Mariners with the money line.

Prediction: Seattle -108

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The Mariners are 4-6 to the over in their last ten games and send Kirby to the hill with a sparkling ERA under two in his last five starts. The Angels' Ohtani has been nearly as sharp with an ERA just over two in his last five starts. The Mariners are 6-4 to the under in Kirby's last ten starts. In addition, the Mariners are 8-0 to the under in the last eight game 2's of series. The Angels are also 3-0-2 to the under in their last five Saturday games. This will be a tightly played, low scoring affair.

Take the under, 7.5 runs.

Prediction: Under 7.5
