Oakland Athletics (65-83) vs. Detroit Tigers (62-87)
MLB Baseball: Monday, September 18th, 7:10 pm EST
Jharel Cotton (8-10, 5.81 ERA) vs. Buck Farmer (4-3, 6.62 ERA)
Line: Oakland -125
The Athletics head to Detroit to take on the Tigers in the first game of a three game series on Monday night. I wouldn’t expect too much excitement from these two teams who are a combined 43 games under .500, but then again I didn’t expect too much excitement in the Tigers game yesterday. Boy, was I wrong.
Matthew Boyd, only 5-10 on the year coming in, had a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. Unfortunately, he gave up a double to Tim Anderson and fell an out short of a no hitter. That’s about as much excitement as you can expect from a team who is 25 games under .500 themselves. Monday’s matchup features two pitchers with an ERA of over 12 combined.
Cotton gets the call
Jharel Cotton gets the call for the A’s on Monday night. He pitched well in his first couple starts of the year, and then went cold for a good three months. He has rebounded lately and has actually won his last three starts, and has gone undefeated over his last five starts.
On the season, he is now 8-10 with an ERA of 5.81. No, that’s not impressive, but to be only two games under .500 and having made 23 starts for a last place team, that’s not all that bad. He’ll now look to go 4-0 in his last six starts and continue to end the season strong.
Farmer opposes the A’s
Buck Farmer will be on the hill for the Tigers on Monday night, and he’ll be looking to go two games above .500 in his ninth start of the year. He’s only had one no decision on the year, and he has to consider himself lucky to be close to .500, much less a game over. He has not pitched well and has been lucky, to put it bluntly.
His ERA is 6.62 and he hasn’t gone over 5.2 innings in his last six starts. Over his last three starts, he’s given up 10 earned runs in 12 innings, and has gone three, four, and five innings in those three starts. His WHIP is now 1.42, although he does have 38 K’s in 35.1 innings.
The Oakland Athletics are:
- 11-4 in their last 15 vs. American League Central.
- 7-3 in their last 10 games on grass.
The Detroit Tigers are:
- 17-36 in their last 53 games on grass.
- 3-13 in their last 16 during game 1 of a series.
- 1-5 in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
Jharel Cotton has been pretty darn good lately, winning his last three decisions. Considering how bad Detroit has been at home and in Game 1’s, I’m going with Oakland.
