Starting Pitchers: Ervin Santana (R) 15-7, 3.35 ERA, 1.13 WHIP (MIN) v. Jaime Garcia (L) 5-9, 4.35 ERA, 1.41 WHIP (NYY)
Money Line: Minnesota Twins +150 | New York Yankees -165
The New York Yankees will play host to the Minnesota Twins in this potential preview of the American League Wild Card game. These two clubs are currently slotted to play in the Wild Card. The Yankees are 3 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East, but they have a 4 game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card standings. Which club will find a way to take game one of this crucial series on Monday?
Twins topple the Jays
The Minnesota Twins picked up an impressive 13-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. The Twins were awesome at the plate in the victory over the Jays. Incredibly, they finished the game with 16 hits. Minnesota’s lineup has been solid throughout the year. The Twins have scored 745 runs, which is the eighth most in the majors this season.
Ervin Santana will get the start for the Twins on Monday night. Santana has been phenomenal in 2017. The right-handed veteran shined in his last start. He pitched six scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres, allowing just three hits and a walk. Additionally, Santana fanned 7 batters in that outing. He was a victim of poor run support, so he didn’t get a win. Santana will need some help from Minnesota’s lineup if he wants to win his 16th game of the season on Monday.
Yankees can’t finish off the Orioles
The New York Yankees nearly swept the Baltimore Orioles in their most recent series. However, the Yankees fell short in a 6-4 loss to the O’s in the fourth and final game of the series. Sunday’s loss to the Orioles snapped a four-game winning streak for the Yankees. New York’s lineup has been phenomenal all season long. The Yankees have put up 793 runs, which is the second-most in either league.
Jaime Garcia will start Monday’s game on the mound. The Yankees are Garcia’s third major league team this year. He also played with the Braves and the Twins. The lefty was solid in his last start, a no-decision against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg. Garcia allowed just 5 hits, a walk, and a run in 4 2/3 innings against the Rays. The Yankees won that contest, but Garcia wasn’t happy with being pulled so early in the game. The southpaw veteran’s last win came as a member of the Minnesota Twins. He’ll try to beat his former team as he takes the hill in this one.
The Minnesota Twins are:
- 4-0 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record.
- 6-2 in their last 8 games vs. a left-handed starter.
- 4-1 in Santana’s last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
- 7-2 in Santana’s last 9 starts.
- 10-4 in Santana’s last 14 road starts.
The New York Yankees are:
- 0-4 in their last 4 vs. American League Central.
Ervin Santana has been phenomenal on the road in 2017. Santana has a 9-2 record with a 2.74 ERA in 14 road starts this season. He hasn’t lost a game on the road since early June. Meanwhile, Jaime Garcia still hasn’t won a game at Yankee Stadium since joining the Yankees. I think Ervin Santana will shut down New York’s explosive lineup on Monday. I like the Twins to win this one in New York.
