Colorado Rockies (56-94) vs. San Diego Padres (73-78)

The 2023 Major League Baseball season goes on Tuesday, September 19, with the Colorado Rockies taking on the San Diego Padres in the NL West battle at Petco Park in San Diego, California, and the first pitch is set for 9:40 PM ET.

Colorado meets San Diego for the second of a three-game series at Petco Park. The Padres won Monday’s opener 11-9 and have won seven of their previous 11 encounters with the Rockies in 2023.

The Rocks just stopped a five-game win streak

The Colorado Rockies had won five consecutive games prior to Sunday’s 11-10 defeat to the San Francisco Giants. After taking two out of three contests from the Chicago Cubs, the Rockies won a four-game home set against the Giants.

Over the last seven days, the Rockies are slashing a sturdy .290/.357/.473 with 14 extra-base hits and seven home runs across 207 at-bats, but keep in mind that they are coming off a seven-game homestand. On the pitching side of things, the Rocks have compiled a 4.33 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and .269 batting average against during that stretch.

The Rockies will start Ryan Feltner on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.  The 27-year-old right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.86 ERA and 33/25 K/BB ratio in eight starts this season. The Rockies bullpen has recorded an underwhelming 4.95 ERA and 4.68 FIP over the last ten days and 40 innings pitched.

The Padres are playing for Blake Snell

The San Diego Padres moved to 72-78 on the season following Sunday’s 10-1 thrashing of the lowly Oakland Athletics. The Padres swept a three-game series at Oakland Coliseum, extending their winning streak to four games. They won again on Monday to make it five in a row and improve to 73-78. However, it’s too little too late for the Padres, who were 5.5 games behind the final wild-card spot in the National League.

San Diego is slashing .247/.347/.414 with eight doubles and seven home runs in the last couple of weeks and 174 at-bats. On the other side of the ball, the Padres have pitched 44 innings in that span while posting a solid 3.68 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and .214 batting average against.

Blake Snell will be on the bump Tuesday, and the 30-year-old left-hander is 14-9 with a 2.43 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 217/93 K/BB ratio in 30 starts (167 IP) in 2023. Snell has been ridiculously good over his last four outings, tallying a microscopic 0.72 ERA to go with a 2.18 FIP and .394 opposing OPS across 25 innings of work. He hasn’t allowed a single run in three of those four starts.

Blake Snell is a man on a mission. He’s a runaway fave to win the Cy Young Award this season, and I’m expecting Snell to extend his dominance when he takes on the Rockies this Tuesday. In his previous two meetings with Colorado in 2023, Snell has allowed four earned runs on nine hits and a walk through 11.1 frames of work. The current Rockies are just 19-for-90 with four doubles and a pair of homers against Snell.

The Rockies have dropped 15 of their previous 17 games on the road. I highly doubt their chances to get things going at the plate in this one, so give me San Diego -1.5 as my best Rockies vs. Padres betting pick.

The Padres bullpen has done a good job over the last ten days, posting a 3.28 ERA and 3.06 FIP in 35.2 innings of work. This should be a tough day in the office for the Rockies’ lineup, so I’m backing the under on the totals.

It’s a tricky wager because of the Rockies ‘pen. The Padres shouldn’t have any problems scoring five or six runs in this clash, and I can only hope they won’t completely destroy the Rocks. That’s why I’m sticking with the Padres to beat the runline.
