The Milwaukee Brewers (84-66, 73-76 RL, 67-77-5 O/U) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (67-83, 71-78 RL, 71-72-6 O/U) in a divisional bout on Tuesday evening. The Brewers will have Adrian Houser on the mound. The Cardinals will counter with Drew Rom. The Cards lead the season series 4-3.

Brewers Increase Lead Atop Division

The Brewers will give Adrian Houser the nod on Tuesday evening. Houser was solid in his latest effort, holding the Marlins to only two runs in five innings and collected the win. The veteran righty has been shaky recently. He posted a poor 5.01 ERA last month and has registered a 4.53 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP accompanied by a 6-4 record in 95.1 innings on the year. Houser has yet to pitch against the Cardinals this month and has a 3.19 ERA and a 4-5 record in 59.1 career innings against the rivals.

Milwaukee is in great shape atop the NL Central, standing a comfortable 6.5 games ahead of the Cubs entering Monday night. The Brewers continue to shine, winning three consecutive series including a series victory against the Marlins and two wins in three meetings against the Nationals on the weekend. The squad is 7-3 in their last ten games.

Carlos Santana has consistently helped the Brewers' offense since he was brought in a deal with the Pirates. The veteran first baseman is hitting .304 with four RBIs and a solid .819 OPS against the Cardinals this season and now has 21 homers with 76 RBIs and a .733 OPS on the year.

Milwaukee is posting an average of 4.46 runs per game, ranking them 19th. The pitching continues to excel and has a 3.82 team ERA, placing them fourth.

Rom Earns First Win

Drew Rom will be on the rubber in this one. Rom came through with his best outing of the season last time out, completing 5.1 shutout innings against the potent Orioles offense, and was credited with his first career big league victory. The rookie was acquired in late July. He has struggled in three of his five outings and has issued a 5.96 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP to go with a 1-2 record in 22.2 innings on the season. This is his first career meeting against the Brewers.

The Cardinals have been competitive recently. They have won three of their last four series including series wins against the Braves and Orioles propelled by the bats. They dropped a series against the Phillies this weekend. They are 10 games below .500 at home and are 5-5 in their last ten bouts.

Jordan Walker is one of the better young hitters in the game. The 21-year-old was the Cardinals' top prospect and has shown why, bashing 16 homers with 47 RBIs and a .788 OPS in 104 games. He has accrued three RBIs and a sharp 1.2 OPS against the Brewers this season. Nolan Gorman is on the IL.

The Cardinals are averaging 4.54 runs, marking them 16th. The pitching has been exploited all season and has a 4.79 team ERA, pegging them 25th.

Insiders Status:

The Milwaukee Brewers are getting closer to securing the division title. They have won seven of their last ten games entering Monday night and continue to excel on the mound. The Cardinals have only won three of their last seven games after a series loss to the Phillies.

Furthermore, Brewers’ expected bulk pitcher Colin Rea has issued a solid 3.29 ERA this month. Cards’ pitcher Drew Rom is a struggling rookie. He has squandered 17 runs in 22 innings on the year and has only pitched more than five innings in two of his five outings. This is not ideal considering the Cardinals bullpen has a poor 4.53 ERA.

Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers ML

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I expect plenty of scoring. The Brewers continue to produce, averaging a solid 5.4 runs in their last ten decisions and I expect the success to continue against Rom. As mentioned he has struggled with the big club and also stumbled in the minor leagues where he posted a 4.82 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.

In addition, the Cardinals' offense has averaged 4.43 runs in the six meetings against the Brewers this season which is no easy task. Rea is decent as the bulk pitcher but has struggled against the Cardinals in his career, allowing 14 runs in 20.1 innings. The over is also 4-1 in the Cardinals’ last five home games.

Prediction: Over
