Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 at 10:10 p.m. EST
Starting Pitchers: Andrew Cashner (R) 9-10, 3.40 ERA, 1.30 WHIP (TEX) v. Felix Hernandez (R) 5-4, 4.19 ERA, 1.33 WHIP (SEA)
Money Line: Texas Rangers +140 | Seattle Mariners -150
The Seattle Mariners are hosting the Texas Rangers in this AL West showdown. Both of these clubs are trying to sneak into the playoffs as the season winds down. The Mariners are only 3.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Wild Card standings. The Rangers are further behind. They’re 4 games behind the Twins in the Wild Card race. Which one of these clubs will improve their chances at making the postseason with a win on Wednesday?
Rangers beat the Angels
The Texas Rangers came away with a nice 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The win in Anaheim snapped a five-game losing streak for the Rangers. The Texas lineup managed to score 3 runs in the first two innings, and the Rangers never trailed in the victory over the Halos. The Rangers haven’t had much of a problem scoring runs this season. They’ve put up 759 runs in 2017, which is the sixth most in the majors.
Andrew Cashner will be the Rangers’ starter in this showdown with the Seattle Mariners. Cashner hasn’t had a great season thus far. He struggled in his last outing, which also came against the Mariners. Cashner gave up 6 hits, 5 walks, and 5 runs in only 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the M’s. The right-hander has won his last three decisions on the road. He’ll try to make it four in a row on Wednesday night in Anaheim.
Mariners fall to the Astros
The Seattle Mariners fell short in Monday’s matchup with the Astros in Houston, losing 7-1. It was Seattle’s third consecutive loss. The M’s couldn’t get anything going in that loss. Seattle’s lineup finished the night with only six hits. The Mariners haven’t been great in 2017. They have a .421 slugging percentage, which is the tenth-worst slugging percentage in either league.
Felix Hernandez will get the nod for the Mariners on Wednesday. King Felix has had trouble winning games in 2017. Hernandez didn’t last long in his last outing. He was returning from the DL, so he only pitched 3 2/3 innings against the Rangers in Arlington. Hernandez allowed 3 hits and a run in a no-decision against the Rangers. Hernandez will look for his first win in over a month in Wednesday’s matchup with the Rangers.
The Texas Rangers are:
- 3-7 in their last 10 vs. a team with a losing record.
- 1-4 in their last 5 during game 2 of a series.
- 1-5 in their last 6 overall.
The Seattle Mariners are:
- 5-0 in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
- 7-1 in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- 20-6 in their last 26 vs. a team with a losing record.
- 5-0 in Hernandez’s last 5 starts vs. American League West.
- 5-1 in Hernandez’s last 6 starts.
Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners have a pretty good track record against the Texas Rangers. The Mariners are 5-0 in Hernandez’s last five starts against the Rangers at Safeco. Additionally, the M’s are 7-1 in their last 8 home games against the Rangers. Felix Hernandez has a 3.31 ERA in three starts against the Rangers this season. I like Hernandez to lead the Mariners to victory on Wednesday night.
