The Chicago White Sox are coming off a tough series against the Cleveland Guardians. They'll look to get back on track Friday when they start a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers. The White Sox lead the season series 12-4. First pitch is at 8:10 p.m. at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

Tigers take 2 of 3 from Orioles

The Tigers just played the White Sox last week and lost two out of three games. They have the worst record in the AL Central and the second worst record in the American League. Detroit is coming off a series where they took 2 out of 3 from Baltimore, basically ending any glimmer of hope the Orioles had of making the playoffs. The Tigers had a chance to sweep, but the Orioles won the final game of the series on Wednesday, 8-1. Matt Manning took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits in 5.1 innings. Kerry Carpenter produced the lone run with a home run.

The Tigers can play spoiler here this week versus the White Sox, too. Eduardo Rodriguez gets the start for the Tigers on Friday. Rodriguez, a left-hander, is 3-5 on the season with an ERA of 4.35 in 14 starts. He had 59 strikeouts and 28 walks in 72.1 innings pitched. Rodriguez got a no-decision in his last start, a 4-3 loss to the White Sox. But he pitched well, giving up just 2 runs on 2 hits in 6.1 innings with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. The Tigers have a team ERA of 4.11, which is 20th in the league. The bullpen has an ERA of 3.52, which is 9th in the majors.

White Sox stumble versus Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians have pretty much established that they are the cream of the crop in the AL Central. They could have lost their lead over the past week, playing their two contenders back to back and beating them both down. They took 4 of 5 from the Twins and they followed that up with a series win against the White Sox. The White Sox come into this series with their playoff hopes severely hampered, following the poor showing against the Guardians. The White Sox not only need to win the majority of their remaining games, but they will need some help and need others to stumble, and the way the Guardians are playing -- that doesn't look likely.

On Friday, Lucas Giolito gets the start for Chicago. Giolito, a right-hander, is 10-9 on the season with a 5.09 ERA in 27 starts. He has 158 strikeouts and 55 walks in 143.2 innings pitched. Giolito got a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to Detroit in 10 innings in his last start. He only gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 4.2 innings with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks. The White Sox have a team ERA of 3.89, which is 13th in baseball. The bullpen has an ERA of 4.06, which ranks 18th.

Insiders Status:

The White Sox season is on life support, but you have to believe that they won't give up until they are officially eliminated and they have to be thinking sweep here this weekend and hope that Cleveland stumbles. The Sox took 2 of three against Detroit a week ago and have dominated them this season, winning 12 of 16 games. Both of these pitchers pitched well against the opposing team in that series, so I expect another tight game. Giolito has been inconsistent but is coming off a strong outing and is facing one of the worst offenses in the league. Take a desperate White Sox team here.

Prediction: Chicago White Sox -169

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

When these two teams played one another last week, two out of the three games went under the total. And those two games that went under featured these two pitchers as starters. This game is also headed below the total, as Rodriguez has been effective against the White Sox and the Detroit bullpen is a strength. Giolito is inconsistent, but he is facing the worst offense in baseball and a team where the unders are a ridiculous 80-57-12 this season. And the White Sox are usually sluggish in the first game of a weekend series, as the under is 5-1-1 in the White Sox's last 7 Friday games. Take the under here.

Prediction: Under
