The San Diego Padres (83-67, 66-83 RL, 70-75-4 O/U) meet with the Colorado Rockies (64-86, 80-69 RL, 67-75-7 O/U) as the division foes begin a three-game series on Friday evening. The Padres will have Sean Manaea on the mound. The Rockies will counter with Ryan Feltner, seeking his fourth win. The Rockies lead the season series 9-7.

Manaea Starts, Padres Build Cushion

The Padres will have Sean Manaea start on Friday. Manaea was solid in his latest effort, holding the Diamondbacks to only two runs in five innings, but received no help and took the loss to dip to 7-9. The veteran left-hander has been inconsistent and is having a disappointing season, recording a 5.18 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 144.1 innings of work. Manaea limited the Rockies to only two runs in 6.1 innings in the only meeting this season and is 1-2 with a 4.24 ERA in 17 career innings against the rivals.

San Diego is looking dangerous recently. They have won five out of their last six games and now have a three-game cushion in the NL Wildcard. They won three of four against the Diamondbacks and followed with a series win against the Cardinals prior to this series.

Brandon Drury has two homers and five RBIs against the Rockies this season. The 30-year-old slugger has been the Padres' best hitter recently, and now has 27 homers with 83 RBIs and an .821 OPS on the year. Drury has six RBIs in his last eight games.

The Padres are scoring an average of 4.37 runs on the season, ranking them 16th overall. The pitching staff has filed a 3.85 team ERA, placing them 10th in the big leagues.

Feltner Seeks Fourth Win

The Rockies will give Ryan Feltner the nod to begin the series. Feltner was competitive in his latest effort, conceding three runs and one home run in 5.2 innings against the Cubs, and earned the win to improve his record to 3-8. The rookie right-hander is having trouble keeping opponents in check, recording an abysmal 6.05 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 80.1 innings on the season. He has allowed four runs in 9.2 innings against the Padres this season.

Colorado had recently won three consecutive series but was issued a four-game sweep by the Giants this week. The offense is above average however the pitching is among the worst in the big leagues. They squandered 25 runs in the series against the Giants. They are 3-7 in their last ten games.

Ryan McMahon has feasted on the Padres this season, recording 10 RBIs and a stellar 1.1 OPS. The 27-year-old is having a fantastic season, bashing 17 homers with 63 RBIs. McMahon has five RBIs along with an .810 OPS on the month. Brendan Rodgers is out of action.

The Rockies are posting 4.42 runs, landing them 12th overall. The pitching staff is struggling and has logged a 5.04 team ERA, pegging them last.

Insiders Status:

The Padres do not like playing at Coors Field. They are an abysmal 1-6 in their seven games in Denver this season and the Rockies lead the season series 9-7. Colorado has a winning record at Coors Field and has won six out of their last eight home games.

Furthermore, Padres’ starter Sean Manaea can’t be relied on. The veteran has an abysmal 6.10 ERA on the road. He has not been able to find a groove at all, logging a 7.88 ERA last month and a disastrous 8.71 ERA in his three outings in September. Rockies’ starter Ryan Feltner has fared well against the Padres, holding them to only four runs in 9.2 innings.

Prediction: Colorado Rockies +128

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I expect a barrage of runs in this one. The Padres bats are hot, scoring 30 runs in their last six games including a series against the Cardinals in that span, and they have fared well against the Rockies, posting an average of 4.88 runs in the 16 meetings.

In addition, the Rockies have scored 28 runs in their last four home games against San Diego. Padres’ starter Manaea has a subpar 4.24 career ERA against the Rockies and has served up nine homers in his last six outings. The over is also 5-2 in the last seven meetings between these foes.

Prediction: Over 11.5
