The Kansas City Royals host the Seattle Mariners on Friday. This is the first game of a three-game series, The Mariners are third in the AL wildcard race, 4 games ahead of Baltimore. The Royals are 60-89, fourth in the AL Central.

Mariners headed for playoffs

The Seattle Mariners come into this series sitting second in the AL West and third in the AL Wildcard race, 4 games up on Baltimore. They are a half game behind Tampa Bay for the second wildcard spot. They just lost a series to the As, and before that, they lost 3 out of 4 to the Angels, so they are not playing great right now.

Marco Gonzales gets the start for the Mariners on Friday. He is 10-14 on the season with a 4.01 ERA in 29 starts. In his last start, he lost to the Angels, getting hit for 5 runs in 6.2 innings. The Mariners have a team ERA of 3.46, which is 6th best in the majors. They have the 7th best bullpen.

Royals pull off sweep

The Kansas City Royals come into this series with some momentum. They took 3 straight games from the reeling Minnesota Twins. They beat the Twins on Thursday 4-1 as Jonathan Heasley got the win to improve to 4-8. Bobby Witt Jr. had 2 hits while Edward Olivares and Drew Waters hit home runs.

The Royals are now 60-89 on the season. They are 4th in the AL Central. On Friday, Brady Singer gets the start. Singer is 9-4 on the season with a 3.07 ERA. Singer got a win in his last start, shutting out the Red Sox over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts. The Royals have a team ERA of 4.70, which is 26th in the league. Their bullpen is the third worst in baseball.

Insiders Status:

The Mariners are pretty much a lock for the playoffs and they have a shot to move up into the top one or two wildcard spots. So, they have not gone on cruise control yet. They still have Baltimore within shouting distance, so they can't afford to let up. That said, I'm not betting against Brady Singer. Singer has been one of the best pitchers in the American League this season. His record won't show it, but to be 9-4 on one of the worst teams in the league is pretty impressive. He was lights out again in his last start, while his counterpart Gonzales struggled. I like the Royals to extend their winning streak here behind Singer. Take the Royals.

Prediction: Kansas City -125

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Singer has been lights out as of late, as he has given up a grand total of 0 runs in his last two starts. In his last 10 starts, he has given up just 15 runs, for an ERA of 1.50.  Gonzales has not been as good as of late, but the Mariners bullpen is excellent, so after the Royals chase Gonzales, look for the Mariners bullpen to shut things down and keep this game below the total. The under is 6-4 in the Mariners last 10 games and their offense has gone a bit cold as of late. In their last 5 games. not counting Thursday's game, they were held to 1 run in four of the five games. They won't do much against Singer with no travel day. Take the under.

Prediction: Under 8
