Seattle will play the second game of its three-game series in Kansas City on Saturday night. The Mariners are coming off a series loss to Oakland, while the Royals swept Minnesota earlier this week. The Royals won the opener on Friday 5-1.

Mariners trying to strengthen playoff chances

Seattle was one of the hottest teams in baseball from the middle of August to the beginning of September, winning 14 games in an 18-game stretch. The Mariners have struggled with consistency since then, losing nine out of 15 games. They dropped three out of four on the road against the Angels before losing two out of three in Oakland earlier this week. Seattle is on a 10-game road trip that concludes on Sunday, which is when the Mariners will return home for their final 10 games of the regular season. They are three games ahead of Baltimore for the final American League Wild Card spot.

The Mariners have been a terrible offensive team this season, ranked No. 28 with a batting average of .228. Center fielder Julio Rodriguez leads the way with 140 hits, including 27 home runs. He missed Friday’s game due to a back injury, and he is questionable to play on Saturday. First baseman Ty France has 136 hits, while second baseman Adam Frazier has 121 hits. They are facing a Kansas City pitching staff that is No. 26 with an ERA of 4.67. Right-handed pitcher Logan Gilbert is going to start for Seattle on Saturday. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk across six innings against the Angels on Monday. Gilbert set season-highs in strikeouts (11) and whiffs (21), throwing five scoreless innings before allowing a sacrifice fly. He is 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA over his last four starts, and he holds a 3.13 ERA overall this season.

Bubic hoping to turn things around

Kansas City has been one of the worst teams in the MLB this season, but that has not stopped the Royals from competing of late. The Royals had won four of their last five games coming into this series, including a series sweep over Minnesota earlier this week. They picked up a 4-1 win on Thursday in the finale. Kansas City has not faced Seattle since April, when the Mariners swept the three-game series and outscored Kansas City 22-12. The Royals will wrap up a six-game homestand on Sunday before going on the road for their final nine games of the season.

They have been a solid offensive team this season, ranked No. 14 with an average of .243. Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. leads the way with 138 hits, including 20 home runs. Veteran catcher Salvador Perez has hit a team-high 22 home runs and driven in 74 runs. They are facing a Seattle pitching staff that is No. 6 with an ERA of 3.47. Left-handed pitcher Kris Bubic is expected to start for Kansas City in this game. He allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks across just 2.2 innings against Boston on Sunday. Bubic allowed one run in each of the first two innings before giving up three runs in the third inning. He has gone 0-7 with a 7.83 ERA over his last seven starts, driving his season ERA up to 5.81.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Seattle is a sizeable favorite on Saturday night, but the Mariners should be closer to -200 in this game. They have a massive advantage on the mound and are also the more motivated team as they look to lock in a playoff spot. Gilbert has been on fire of late, going 3-1 with a 0.78 ERA in his last four starts. Bubic has been trending in the opposite direction, losing seven consecutive starts and posting a near-8.00 ERA during that stretch. Seattle has won eight of its last nine games in Kansas City.

Prediction: Mariners -155

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Seattle is rarely going to play a high-scoring game due to its lack of offense. The Mariners have one of the worst lineups in the majors and they could be without their best player again on Saturday night. They are going to score a few runs against Bubic, but he should fare better than he has in recent outings. There is no reason to think Gilbert’s hot stretch will come to an end, as Kansas City is an uninspired and mediocre team. The Mariners have gone under the total in six of their last nine games, and they have also cashed the under in eight of their last 12 road games.

Prediction: Under 8
