Atlanta Braves (70-83; 77-71-5 O/U) vs. New York Mets (66-88; 87-55-12 O/U)
MLB: Monday, September 25, 2017 at 4:10pm EST
Line: Atlanta -120/New York +100
The New York Mets will host the Atlanta Braves in the first game of a doubleheader Monday afternoon from Citi Field. The Braves will give the start to 23-year old right-hander Lucas Sims, and the Mets will counter with 23-year old right-hander Chris Flexen. The Mets currently lead the season series 9-6.
Sims Silences Nationals in No Decision
Lucas Sims will make his 13th appearance and ninth start of the season, targeting his first win of the month. Sims was outstanding in his previous start, limiting the Nationals to one run over five innings, and finished with the no decision in a game the Braves lost. The rookie right-hander has pitched well in a few of his starts, however overall he is having trouble and now owns a 5.14 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP accompanied with a 2-5 record in 49 innings pitched. He made a relief appearance against the Mets earlier this month and conceded two runs in two innings. Johan Camargo continues to swing the bat well, sporting a terrific .395 average with eight RBI’s this month. The 23-year old third baseman is having a very encouraging rookie campaign, hitting .311 with four home runs and 27 RBI’s. Camargo is 5 for 17 with one RBI against the Mets this season.
The Braves are currently averaging 4.57 runs per game, ranking them 20th overall, and are hitting .263 as a team. The Atlanta pitching owns a rough 4.78 team ERA, placing them down at 25th overall.
Flexen Faces Braves for First Time
Chris Flexen will make his 13th appearance and ninth start of the season, targeting his first win of the month. Flexen pitched two scoreless innings of relief against the Marlins in his latest appearance last week. The rookie right-hander has struggled in his starting role, and now owns a 7.13 ERA and a 1.99 WHIP accompanied with a 3-4 record in 41.2 innings pitched on the season. Flexen, who will be facing the Braves for the first time, is having big issues with his command, walking 30 batters in his 41.2 innings of work. Jose Reyes continues to swing the bat well, recording 11 hits along with six RBI’s over his last nine games. The 14-year veteran shortstop is having his best month of the season, and is currently hitting .244 with 14 home runs and 55 RBI’s. Reyes has driven in 15 runs this month.
The Mets are currently scoring an average of 4.60 runs per game, ranking them 18th overall, and are hitting .251 as a team. The New York pitching is having rough season, posting a 5.04 team ERA, placing them 28th in the Major Leagues.
The Atlanta Braves are:
- over is 20-6-2 in their last 28 Monday games.
- over is 16-7 in their last 23 road games against a right-handed starter.
The New York Mets are:
- over is 15-6-1 in their last 22 games against a right-handed starter.
- over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 games in the first game of a series.
- over is 18-8-1 in their last 27 games overall.
I am taking the over in this contest. Flexen has struggled in a starting role, serving up seven runs in each of his last two starts, and his big control issues will also hurt him. Furthermore, Sims has been awful on the road, going 1-3 with a poor 7.40 ERA in five road appearances (four starts), so I am confident both sides can put some runs on the board.
