The Seattle Mariners will head on the road to Angel Stadium on Saturday night for an American League West showdown against the Los Angeles Angels.

After dropping seven of its last 10 games, the Angels have fallen to 73-81, good for fourth place in the division standings. Meanwhile, Seattle remains in the thick of the American League Wild Card race. The Mariners have won six in a row to improve to 85-69, putting them just two games back of the New York Yankees for the AL’s final Wild Card spot.

Can the Halos play the role of spoiler with a win at home against Seattle on Saturday?

Anderson looks to continue success for Seattle

Seattle is scheduled to call upon left-hander Tyler Anderson to take the ball at Angel Stadium on Saturday evening. Anderson is 7-9 with a 4.01 ERA in 28 starts this season. In his previous trip to the mound, the Mariners’ lefty spun seven innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts against the Oakland Athletics.

Anderson has quietly put together a career year on the mound in 2021. His current ERA (4.01) is the best mark of his career but there are also other signs that he’s put it all together this year. The Mariners’ lefty has fanned 7.46 batters and walked only 1.98 batters per nine innings of work, also a career-best mark. He’s also made a habit of getting ahead of hitters by throwing a career-high 68.7 percent of his first pitches for strikes.

In two career starts against the Angels, Anderson is 0-1 with an unsightly 8.10 ERA. According to Baseball Savant, current Angels are batting only .063 in 18 plate appearances off of the Mariners’ southpaw heading into Saturday’s contest.

Barria looking to finish season strong versus Mariners

Los Angeles is expected to counter with right-hander Jaime Barria for the second game of its weekend series against the Mariners. Barria is 2-4 with a 4.77 ERA for the season but has flashed signs of turning the corner as of late. The 25-year-old allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits in 5 ⅓ innings of work in his last start against the Houston Astros and comes in having dropped four consecutive decisions.

Despite his season-long numbers, Barria continues to outpitch his peripherals since returning to the rotation. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in five straight starts, including each of his last three appearances at home. The Angels’ right-hander has struck out just 5.76 batters and walked 3.13 batters per nine innings of work this season. He’s also pitched around a whopping .330 BABIP, suggesting that he hasn’t had as much good luck as it might seem.

The Halos’ starter comes into this matchup with a career 2-4 overall record and a 5.49 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) against the Mariners. Per Baseball Savant, current Mariners are batting .292 in 52 plate appearances off of the Angels’ right-hander coming into Saturday’s start.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

The Mariners have less than a week to cut into their deficit in the AL Wild Card race. Seattle has been among the hottest teams in baseball down the stretch. Anderson has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his last 15 starts. Meanwhile, Barria has pitched around a 1.60 WHIP to post a 3.31 ERA over his last three starts. Look for him to regress a little here and take the Mariners to cover the run line in this AL West battle on Saturday.

Prediction: Seattle Mariners -1.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

These two teams are projected for 8.5 runs but that number seems a bit too low in this spot. As well as Barria has pitched as of late, the Angels' right-hander appears to be due for some regression on the mound. Meanwhile, Anderson has had his fair share of struggles in his career against the Halos, so look for both teams to get on the board early and often in this one. Take this AL West showdown to go over the projected total at Angel Stadium on Saturday.

Prediction: Over 8.5
